    Clutch change?

Looking at an RS2 but it has the tell tale signs of a knackered clutch - high bite point and ever so heavy, way heavier than my TVRs. However I realise that this may be the norm as I'm new to these cars.

So does the car need a new clutch and if so How much would I be looking at? Car has done 125k miles

    Thanks

Does it slip, shudder, hard to change gears or make any noises?

None of those just really heavy and almost binary in its use. I doubt my wife could use it!

Sounds like the guide sleeve for the release bearing has a friction problem, possibly caused by oil/fluid leaks and other contaminants creating a gummy surface for the bearing to slide on. They usually form wear marks along the surface as well, which over time will affect the way the pedal feels.

Might be worth checking the clutch master and slave cylinders before going to the effort of a gearbox removal, these usually just have leakage issues but could also be a piston problem. Also check to make sure the clutch pedal linkage inside the car is ok and not sticky itself. Basically, eliminate all other possible problems before getting her up on stands and proceeding with the glorious job of a gearbox removal

Sounds like an aftermarket uprated clutch to me. The standard clutch is not heavy and is progressive in it's take-up.

I agree, could also be a firmer pressure plate and ceramic clutch. I assumed it was a car you owned & I missed the part saying you were looking at one to purchase

As a pressure plate ages I find it gets heavier. Just the way the springs go off...

I noticed after changing my brake bomb, clutch peddle became a slight bit softer and had a much nicer engagement. Clutch was changed a couple of months ago.

ABY and ADU stock clutch is quite heavy, much more so than stock 3B. The bite point is adjustable, so not like the old self adjusting cable efforts.

If it doesn't slip or judder then it may last another 100k or it may not... Best to factor in a change in to the price, just in case. Not much change from £1000 for a Sachs unit, release bearing, pilot bearing and fitting or you could change to a SM 3B unit with SRE clutch for about the same.
