I have a whirring noise when 1st, 3rd and 5th gear is selected. Sounds a bit like a noisey wheel bearing and i can hear it from the gearbox area and pessenger footwell. Its perfect in 2nd, 4th and reverse gear . It hasn't been a gradual, the noise just just started suddenly whilst driving along. The gearbox had always been fine with no issues. It's done 160000 miles and I generally drive it sensibly due to fuel consumption. It's had a remap a few years ago running 280hp. I Don't know the best way to go about this one. Has anyone had similar issues like this before? Should I start looking for a second hand gearbox or get mine reconditioned?

Sounds like a shaft bearing has gone. You could pickup a cheap replacement or get yours refurbed. I use a place in Birmingham who do a great job and don't charge a fortune. Probably £300 for an overhaul with new bearings. You'll probably find a second hand box for £150 - £250I have a whirring noise when 1st, 3rd and 5th gear is selected. I have recently done all oil and fluid service, the gearbox oil didn't look too bad and was the first time ive done the gearbox fluid since I've had the car. I had grief getting the plugs out especially rear diff, ended up renewing all plugs after struggling to remove the old ones and they where chewed anyway. The oil level in the gear box was fine as quite a lot came out. I hoped a simple oil change might cure it but still much the same noise.Comment

Ok if i have à shaft bearing problem i need thé gearbox out. Do i need to remove thé engine or do i try leaving it in and get thé gearbox out separatly? Which is thé best way to remove it?Comment

When mine was done, we had the box out as it's easier than fannying about with bits and bobs around the engine bay.

Took us approximately 4-5 hours to get the box out really.1996 S2 ABY SilverComment
