    Needle bearing in crankshaft/flywheel

    Hi guys,

I was wondering what could happen' if there is no needle bearing in crankshaft or flywheel, where input shaft from transmission goes?

Is it necessary to have that bearing?

That photo is NOT of an Audi needle/pilot bearing.

The needle bearing ensures that the nose of the transmission input shaft (shown in the foreground of the photo below) it perfectly centered in the flywheel so that there is no wobble in the shaft that could potentially mess up clutch action and gear changes.

More specifically "Pilot Bearing: The pilot bearing supplied with most DMF's is a caged needle roller bearing. If it fails, the transmission input shaft must be repaired or replaced. If the input shaft is not repaired correctly or replaced, the lack of input shaft support will result in DMF center bearing failure."
