    New linkage needed?

I viewed an awesome S2, but unless all S2s are like it, the gear box was very stiff. Now my Colt has a stiff gear box but can be used easy, this S2 was very hard to put in gear for someone who hasn't drove one, even the person test driving me struggled!

Gear 1 and 2 seemed quite nasty to put into, car drove lovely though from what I saw!

Maybe an adjustment or a change of gear oil will help. Any noises (whining) while driving? Any grinches shifting 1-2, or 2-3 for example?

On my 93 UrS4 01E 5 spd, I take a side track into neutral while shifting from 1 to 2 (gives some time to pick up the syncro's (my theory)).

These are not easy transmissions to shift, even when they were new.

It might just be this: The gear change ball joint thingy , I had real trouble getting 2nd gear.

The 01Es don't shift very nicely anyway, but it shouldn't be hard to get into gear.
You'd need to remove the gear gaitor to see if the ball joint is worn, pretty easy.
There is a ball jiont on the gearbox end of the linkage too, that also wears out. Normally some adjustment will compensate for the wear and you can get it working nicely.

Gear change was pretty bad on my RS2 until I changed the ball joint - old one was badly worn when it came out. Some adjustment of the linkage was required and it feels much better now. Certainly not hard to put in gear but you do need to give it a positive shove into gear. Having a short shift fitted can require a bit more effort too.

No whining noises my friend! Just crunched maybe a few times in 1st and 2nd.

Might be as lucky as a bit of adjustment - mine was like this when I bought it 9 years ago and it's still fine. Gear change certainly has a very mechanical feel to it; like you're moving some very heavy machinery, so it won't be rushed! You can smooth it out with a heavier gear knob but even then, it'll never be smooth. Prefer it to the wooly BMW feel personally, as you can feel every movement of the 'box through the stick.

It is not a box that wants to be rushed. Very deliberate but once used to it, is really good and solid. You will never achieve rapid gear changes in it but to be fair, that isn't needed anyway with these cars.

Could engine/gearbox mounts effect this as well?

I'm only asking all these questions because I want this car to be the one.

It had a prang (been fixed up) but the there is a finger gap between the bumper and wing, needs sorting. Also the stone chips are showing the red paint through where it had been sprayed on the wing! Everything else important engine wise is fine though, ran lumpy on start up but it's been sorned and not started up in a while!

Over all the car is clean on the outside, the inside is typical from any old car. It's the beige interior (Seats and carpets). Wanted black ideally but can't be fussy!
