    Rear diff flange shaft play

I recently replaced my rear CV joints and left side wheel bearing when chasing a whining sound from the rear. After that I installed all new polybushes for the rear diff and also a Stern lock down ring was added to remove any excess movement from the rear. Superb mods alltogether with new street density gearbox mounts -> very sharp gear change and lot less clunks.

The question still remains: Is the rear shot? In means of flange shaft play which in this case is about 10mm longitudinal in the right side flange and about 4-5mm in the left side. Right side flange also leaking oil so the seal is attleast bygone...

I think the CV joints have been stuck in terms of longitudinal movement and that has caused the damage. Haven´t had time yet to test that the flange bolts are properly secured, but if they are what could be done next?

The diffs I have show some movement in the driveshaft flanges, 10mm sounds more than I have seen however.

It does feel much, but what causes the slack. If the diff bearings are shot it would move horisontal? I´ll have to drop the CV´s and check the bolts. If they are not to blame, then the diff has to come apart...

I would think if the retainiing bolt through the centre of the flange is tight then the only culprit would be the taper bearings external to the diff. That may well explain your whine noise..

Thank you for your input I´ll have to check that as soon as possible. Luckily it is quite easy to drop the diff down if needed.

I have to admit that 10mm sounded bit exaggerated, but there is still a hefty slack in the flange

I´ll had to cut out the propshaft bolts to get the diff off the car. Heated and hammered the bolts but only manged to get two of them out without cutting. Same thing with the left side CV joint. Could not get it off from the flange...

Looks like the right hand side bearings are worn out, so next one must open the diff.

That's barely 2mm! I would just have left that alone to be honest, its not going to come to any harm!
