Recently (Nov. 27), I was lucky enough to purchase the only C4 S4 V8 6 spd avant in North America. The avant is a German market left hand drive car that was built in January 1994 and was imported into Japan in August 1994. In 2010, the car was sold in Japan to a Canadian who imported it to Canada. For health reasons (left knee issues), he had to sell the 94 S4 V8 6 spd avant to buy a vehicle with an automatic transmision (Merc E55 AMG wagon). I was lucky enough to be first in line for the 94 V8 S4 avant after trying to find this vehicle for three years (turns out it was 10 minutes away).
As the purchase proceded, the seller told me that he recently had to have the clutch pedal replaced because it broke. I knew from C4 UrS4/S6 experience that if the clutch is getting worn, the force required to push the pedal down goes up significantly, causing things to break. As a result, I knew that the clutch was going to need replacement soon. What I didn't know was just how soon. Friday (Dec. 13th - lucky? 13!! - not) it failed such that I could no longer shift with the engine on/rotating.
Long story just to get to the point: I need to purchase the proper clutch kit for this application AND despite me previously reassuring my wife that parts for this rare car will not be rare, I think they are, at least in this case (there are NO manual transmission 4.2L ABH V8 D1 V8s in North America).
My 94 V8 avant is a 4A58T9 model with the ABH 4.2L V8 and the CGM 6 spd (with oil pump and cooler). Based on parts information that I have seen, the flywheel is a single mass flywheel (PN 077105269H) and is unique to the 4.2L ABH. The pressure plate (PN 077141117L) seems to have been used on the ABY-engined S2s, the RS2, the early A8s and the mid-90's V8s. The friction plate (PN 077141031D) was used on the ABH in the 94 UrS4 and the 92-94 V8s as well as the early A8s and the AEC V8 in the UrS6s with V8s. The release bearing (PN 012141165E) seems to be very common. The pilot/needle bearing that sits on the nose of the tranmission input shaft, in the flywheel, seems to be PN 034105313A appears to be quite widely used. Likewise the slave cylinder, PN 4A0721261. In contrast, the clutch master cylinder, 4A1721401C, is exclusive to the C4 V8 UrS4/S6s and S6plus V8s.
So, in summary, I hoping that someone here can point me to a supplier with a Luk or Sachs clutch kit (pressure plate, friction plate, release bearing and pilot needle bearing) for this C4 ABH application. If possible, I would also be potentially interested in a clutch master cylinder. I am in Canada in a suburb of Vancouver.
I know it is close to Christmas and that could delay things both at the shipping end and the subsequent shipping. That said, getting something lined up sooner would be better than later. (My other UrS4 (a 93 with the AAN) which normally does summer duty, but now must be utilized, must be jealous because it has started to act up (maybe fuel pump) and make strange noises))
Oh, yeah, and I might be regretting selling my reliable 98 C4 A6q avant before the Christmas trip that was planned.
