I have just changed the oil in my 3b gearbox, and there is oil leaking from what I think is the selector shaft. Has anyone had this before. I assume there is an O ring, if so is it
Fixable on the car, or is a gearbox out job.
01A gerbox? Out of my modest experience:
1. Probably too much oil. It is often told that oil level must be right on the oil filling nut hole. I have seen in some manual that oil level should be a little bit lower (7mm or smth like that, don't remember exactly).
2. Gear shaft seal ring may need being changed. I would rather use ring with 1mm smaller inner diameter than OEM recommended one.
Thinking about it, It didn't have enough oil in the box before due to the leak and when refilled it was filled to the filler hole perfectly and the whole box cleaned. 100miles later the box is in a similar state.
My question remains, do the seals come out with much effort and what's the process in removing the selector? Or is it a case of un-joining from the knuckle and sliding it off and new one over?
the bolt which looks green in your pic loosens and then the selector can be pulled off the shaft. The O ring can be prised out (an oil seal pick would be handy) and slid out over the shaft. I screwed a small self tapper into it and pulled out with vicegrips. To fit the new one get a socket which goes over the shaft and use that to tap the new seal in.
Are you sure the oil is meant to be up to the filler plug? On the 2wd 80 tdi gearbox it was meant to be below that, cant remember how much but you have to insert a bit of wire or the likes and measure it. I think it was 20mm from memory.
@220bhp How did you get on with replacing the seal? Did it cure the leak? Any additional tips you can pass on as I have the same symptoms as you did.
Thanks in advance.
I have not done anything to it. The leak is only small now, so I decided to leave it for a while. The car is booked in for a respray soon, I may have a look then.
