  • Horrible rattling in 5th

My car has just started a very loud audible rattle in 5th, though the car also has now what sounds like the thrust bearing has gone but about 100 times louder while in neutral, though when the clutch is down it's fine.
Just wondering if anyone has a clue what this is, i think my gearbox is fooked cause syncro to second felt bad and crunched a couple of days just before this happened. I also think the clutch hasnt been fully dis-engaging.
Dammit this looks like it's going to be a big bill!
Anyone know of decent gearbox people in the south east?

If youput your foot on the clutch and the noise goes then its one of a few things. Is your car 3B or ABY?? If 3b then its either the the springs in the clutch rattling or the bearings in the gearbox. if ABY its either the flywheel or the things i mentioned above.

It's a 3b, whats annoying is that from the recipts, the previous owner spent a just under a couple of K at QST he had the gearbox rebuilt and a new prop etc, that was only about 12K miles ago!

i'd be back on the doorstep asking for some explanation of why something should be failing that early then.....? Check the warranty for it too, no doubt if luck is not on your side it will be guaranteed for 12 months or 12K miles.

        Hope u get it sorted...

Yeh but Tom, will you get it back together again or not

Mine makes a noise when the clutch pedal is down sometimes, like a spinning noise but isnt a constant noise, im guessing this is a bearing, its fine when the clutch is up.

Oh well, something else on the shopping list at somepoint

              Update:
I spoke to a gearbox specialist and they think it's a journal bearing or something like that on the seperate shaft for 5th (i sound like a woman now i wasnt realy listenign just waiting to hear the cost). Though if anyone can make heads or tails of what i said and think that it's possible please let me know what you all think

Id go back to QST then as ask WTF is going on. The journal bearing is internal to the gearbox.....

if you need the number of a good gearbox specialist in the s/e let me know, theres one in Margate. Lost of reccomendations from various people, also rebuilt the box in my friends s2 avant last year. Top job. Wherever you take it youll save a fortune if you can remove it and re fit into the car yourslef.

                    ********

Dam Gearbox! It was making that rattling like before havent had the money to fix it but havent driven it at all, i needed to get in my garage so moved it out and now a thick slightly shinny oil has pissed out all over the drive! Dam this is getting more and more expensive.
COuld it be a diff seal from the box?
                    Pleas help!

I'm not too sure , i didnt fancy taking the undertray off in the snow, that was fun going down the hill this morning a nice combination of snow, ice, and oil! I will have a look later on probably the weekend as the weather is meant to clear up then, i dont think it's engine oil, it's too black and shiny, i only had an oil change about 100miles ago.

If its on the undertray then i would say its come from the engine. The tray doesnt go back as far as the gearbox.

Bu**er, i hope it's not the sump or something, i dont know why though it really does not look like engine oil, where do the oil cooler pipes run?
