    5 speed to 3B 6 speed - 3BYBOX

Hi chaps once upon a time I read on either this forum, another forum or somewhere in the net.
That a guy used the standard 3B five speed gearbox and actually added a six longer gear to the gearbox using parts from something else in the Audi range to act pretty much like an overdrive.

Gearbox's to me are are still a black art lol and have never rebuilt one of the Audi ones.
But this solution would be ideal for me as I like the 5 speed over the Aby 6 speed any day. So fitting a 6th gear to it which is a longer gear than top gear in all other boxes should give you a 200mph car

Anyway if anyone has any clue as to where this thread is please point me in that direction

I can't help you with the link but I can show you some of the potential to convert a 5 spd to a 6 spd using Audi parts using the C4 UrS as an example:

"Our NAmerican UrS4/S6 CBD 5 spds have a spacer where the 6th gear would go. The 6th gear is short and has a shorter spacer. This is shown for the CBD 5 spd and the CBL 6 spd in the first diagram. The second diagram shows the diesel 01E 6 spd CYT gears. With the 6 spds, you need to change both the 5th and 6th gears in a conversion. The third diagram shows the corresponding CBL and CYT mainshaft parts that you would need for a conversion (probably easier to buy a good used EDU from an A6 2.7tt)

    CBD and CBL differences:

Mainshaft parts for a 6spd CBL or CYT conversion:

CBD is an 01E box though, not an 01A like the 3B. I seriously doubt there will be space inside the 01A casing or surplus length on the shafts to add an extra gear, or space for the the selector fork etc to make it work - it was never designed for it, unlike the 01E.

Not sure on the Audi ones but I've read somewhere about a 5 to 6 speed for vw transmissions
I think it was for t4 vans
Maybe worth a google and see how they do it

Try searching on the Porsche forums as they do this on the 944. The 944S2 uses a 5 speed 01E gearbox and the 968 a 6 speed. I remember a thread somewhere where it told you what parts were needed to upgrade to a 6 speed.

From Intended Acceleration http://www.intendedacceleration.com/...onversion.html I got the idea that this was possible.
I used the 5-6 gearset & shift cylinder from a broken 6-speed EDU transmission & put these parts in to my 5-speed CBD transmission. There were no problems fitting these parts & I only needed to remove the shift cylinder & back cover of the transmission. I also reworked the Torsen while I was in there.

Whoops, I did not realize that the 3b in an S2 was fitted with a 01a.
