Unable to select reverse - 95 S2 Avant

Hi guys, got up this morning and went to reverse old Audrey off the drive only to find I can't select reverse! The lever will go across into the reverse position but if I try to engage the gear I get a mild grinding noise no matter what position the clutch is in. Even with the engine off it refuses to engage.

All other gears engage correctly, and the only thing I've been able to find is a lot of wear at the gearstick ball joint, but even with a helper manipulating the linkage in the engine bay by hand* I can't select reverse. Anyone got a clue what's up?

*(Possibly not not in the right manner, we're not S2 experts!)

Right I now believe it is purely the worn linkage mechanism, there be some serious play in it and with a bit of wangling with a big flathead I can now engage reverse properly. The relief I feel right now is astronomical.

Unfortunately the part is now NLA, and its only available from Audi Tradition.

But your problem might be different

Yes I think that's what's causing the problem. That brown seat in the middle is completely loose.

I believe this should fit?

I've same problem with my type 85 cq.
Will look for same fault although I know parts are different
