Don't think you can just cut & weld them, they need to be heat treated, straightened, balanced etc.
Given the nature of your build I would get a bespoke shaft made.

Put the relevant dimensions (of the bare shaft) up on here and CA and see if someone can match the size and fitment you need.

i have a b2 coupe quattro with 01e cbl box and have self shortened the right driveshaft
i cut the shaft in the middle and make it on the correct length
            The shaft is hollow inside
i made a iron bar 0.1mm thicker than the hole inside(about 30 cm long) and press(with big force) it in the both shafts and leave a gap in the middle of 1 cm for welding
than i check the shaft for sling but it was okay
after welding i drilled a hole on both sides and put a steel bar in from 12 mm a little to short so i could close the end by welding
on the end i machinend the shaft so it look like one piece
up to now, the shaft remained standing

yes they are different lengths ,its the near side [left ] front that i have a problem with im pretty sure with the 016 gearbox the diff is on the opposite side of gearbox compared to 01e so i beleave we switched the shafts left to right when we fitted 01e box , its been fine for years but the the n/s has always been 10mm apprx to long meaning we have always had to run with more camber on that side

Run a shorter shaft from the other side with an alloy spacer between the gearbox cup and the CV joint. Means you need to carry less spares as well as the shafts are the same.

                    YES!!! couldn't agree more!

for my build im making my axles all the same length and running spacers
carry just a few spares that work for all corners
