  • Too much play between the gear shift rod and the shift lever ball?

In order to replace the clutch slave cylinder, I've decided to have the transmission removed to make things easier.

While the transmission is out, I am also going to install new pressure plate and clutch disk, and other small bits..

The first was the leaky crank seal..

In goes the new seal. The rubber boot of the steering rack may needs servicing, too. Ditto for the plastic coolant connector..

One thing that caught my eye was the shift linkage:

Notice the ball and the shift rod were dislocated. The shift rod literally dropped out of the ball when I took the transmission out. Is that the way it is? I think the ball must have been a snug fit into the cup of the shift rod... (Maybe I am wrong)

Please shed some light on this and educate me how to service the ball or the shift rod.
Do I replace or refurbish anything, or I only need the rubber boot?
Working...
