Not sure if my information could be useful on swapping B5 01E to B4 but i have putted Tdi and Dsy box on C4
w/o any modifications.only Tdi requires to swap the output flange shaft from gasoline gearbox.
Some bolts on the bellhousing has slightly differences on length and size but that could be done easily.

What's wrong with your oem CGB RS2 gearbox ?

Just asking, as it'll have the wide first gear and the stronger shaft.

Mine has the wider and stronger first gear.
But it was doing a noise, I´ve opened the box and one bearing was not ok.
It was replaced, now the noise is much smaller, but it still has a noise.
I was planning to replace all bearings, but it is more expensive than an used RS4 gearbox.

I´ve checked each part PN between two RS4 and mine gearbox and the internal parts all most match.
Only some small differences, like the 5th and 6th, torsen, input shaft and some miscellaneous.

          rgds!

Could parts from the RS4 box be used to lengthen and strengthen a CRG gearbox?

From memory the RS4 box has shorter 3rd and 4th gears than the RS2, but a tad longer 5th and 6th.

Yes its no stronger if your rs2 had a wide and flex shaft just different ratios.

If you guys want to talk about putting RS4 parts in an RS2 transmission, you might want to at least get the RS2 transmission codes correct. (Sorry).

Very early RS2s had the S2 avant 6 spd CGR transmissions.

At some point (I can't figure out exactly when), the CGRs were replaced by the CRB transmission (exclusive to the RS2) with the wide first gear on the "necked-down" (twistable) mainshaft.

"deliberate" as in you purposely typed the wrong code just to bait pedantic minutia-correctors like myself?

                      Sure.

Only to clarify, my gearbox is CGR55538, with stronger and wider input shaft and the car is a S2.

But not stronger and wider than the CRB RS2 input shaft.

Interesting (to pedantic minutia collectors/correctors like myself ) that the main 01E case for the CGR, Item 1, 01E301103K is the same for the C4s CBD, CET and CBL tranmissions, the CGR and the later RS2s CRB but Item 22, 01E301231L, is only for the CGR and CRBs, no C4 transmissions (which use an Item 22, 01E301231J ). In contrast, Item 14, 01E301211A, was used on the C4 tranmissions as well as the CGR, CRB, etc.
