What is going south from my driveline?

I would appreciate if someone could point me to right direction with my driveline problem

When car has been parked some period of time and I reverse it at the beginning it starts to knock like the gearing of the transmission has big gaps between the tooth. It feels throw the clutch and steering. Also the suspension springs bangs a little.

After I change the direction it usually stops and if I drive the car fowards and after that reverse everything is fine. That said the stand still parking and reversing after that brings the problems...

Front drive shafts joints are changed (outer and inner) , gearbox oil is fresh and no big pieces of metal from the box, but no difference.

Car sat 9 months without engine and the symptoms started after that. No noise from wheel bearings or such...

    Gearbox busted or what?

Maybe the rear diff lock engages automatically? Had that with my type 85 CQ, same symptoms. Never got to the bottom of it though but disconnected the vaccuum lines to stop it from happening

Hmm thanks, but did it feel like it was coming from the front. Worth checking though...

just an off chance it may be your rear exhaust banging on something. Perhaps the rubber mounts have perished or snapped and it has allowed some twist on the back box/pipework.

I once got myself a set of CV joints convinced that was the cause of my knocking from the front. Imagine how happy i was to find the cheap rubber mounts had stretched and were allowing the pipework to hit the driveshaft at the back!

Easy to check at least - grab tailpipe and wiggle

There is something odd indeed in the diff lock. Have to unplug the hoses and test. When driven slowly forwards with diff lock it feels really solid and notchy. Somehow same as when reversing..
