    Audi S2 Flywheel issues

    Hi guys,

Just took my gearbox off to check and replace worn clutch and my DM flywheel is completely worn. Im looking to replace it with a standard DM flywheel or a replacement SMF.
I would appreciate any advice and help on which route to go SMF or DMF.
Was wondering if a AAN flywheel and clutch would work on my S2? cos there are several around.
    I have a 1996 ABY S2 and is making around 450whp.
    Thanks alot.

I think the 450whp might be the reason why your dmf is in bad condition .For this level of power I would go for SMF.You will have to remove the spacer between the box and engine and use shorter bolts. You might experience slight noises from drivetrain with SMF .

ABY and ADU DMFW vs AAN DMFW

For years I wondered why the ABYs in the S2s and the ADUs in the RS2s needed a spacer between the engine and the 01E transmission. I found out a while back: The ABY/ADU dual mass flywheel (DMFW) is considerably thicker than the AAN DMFW and is "dog-dished". The ABY/ADU flywheel is a 034105266E and the AAN flywheel is a 034105266C.

Here is one shot of the AAN DMFW:

Here is a shot of an ABY flywheel (from willg54 via doron) showing its "dog dish" design, making it effectively thicker. This is the same design that was used on the ABH V8 (like my 94 S4 V8 avant) with 6 spd manuals.

Here is the an ABY/ADY DMFW from the side:

As a result, to prevent the clutch plate from jamming on the bell housing, a spacer is needed to push the transmission further away from the engine. Here is a shot of the spacer

So I think you could the AAN DMFW and clutch and skip the spacer. The drive (propeller) shaft length might be an issue

Thanks so much for the info UrS4boy, this really clears things up for me. I to have wondered the need for the spacer in ABY yet not in AAN.
So im gona need a 3b/7a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate and the bits to do the conversion.
Wish someone would put a complete kit together for the conversion to SMF for ABY ADU, Im sure they would sell quiet a few kits...business idea lol
        Thanks again.

I changed to a SMFwhen I rebuilt the engine last and also fired an updated Sachs clutch and pressure plate. Would recommend if you are running higher power levels
