I just bought an engine and box under the asumption that it was a 5 speed, as i was leaving the breakers the owner said it was a six speed box, what is the main visable difference? i might have got even more of a bargain than i initially thought but then again he was welsh!!!
5 speed or 6 speed ?

havent the 6gears tranny the gear hardnes in the right side of the box??? or?? havent got a 6tr tranny myselves yet -
Just take a look at the gearboxcode wich is at the ground site, somewhere between the front driveshafts.
That would explain a lot.Comment

it should give some code containing mostly 3 "things" like CGR or EDU and some digits. But just look for something like a serial number.
But it doesn`t say 6 speed
Hopefully this helps a bit.Comment

Some info on 5 and 6 speed gearboxes here: http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/1996 A6 TDI Quattro Avant, Xenon HIDs, A4 Autodipping rearview.

If a 6 speed, the selector will be on the top of the casing (just behind the bell housing) on the left hand side (as facing forward sittin in the car).
5 speed boxes have the selector mech. at the back of the gearbox itself.L.CarrComment

if its a 6speed, can i copy your gear linkage??
if your not a million miles away,
5speed just has a basic shaft and knuckle joint
6speed has bout 4 linkages and just looks completly different
6speed i beleve is also a longer gearbox
