  • I do not believe it RS2 propshaft woes

Now after all being well since new propshaft fitted the car has developed a loud drone. It is most pronounced at 60mph in top and was not present prior to replacement.
What can you do wrong when replacing a propshaft ????

    Help

Leave the cv joints dry, not much else.

By that you mean they should be greased on fitting ??

Absolutely yes, and with the correct type of high temp grease too. AFIK all new CV joint kits are supplied with grease packs, or should be.

When you refit the propshaft you should use the special Audi tool which shows you how straight the propshaft is as there are some special spacer washers that you need to place between the centre bearing bracket and the car itself. These washers come in different thickneses of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10mm. The droning sound that you here may well be down to the fact that the centre bearing is not positioned properly in relation to the front and rear CV joints

Don't know if this is relevent but my bro had the centre driveshaft on his rallye done and it needed balancing! Know its not the same system but its the sort of crazy thing VAG do!

I would imagine a factory new prop will not need balancing.

If the cv joints were left unlubed they're dead already

My guess is poor alignment. Took car in this am. The unit came packed with grease. However I had assumed the head guy had fitted it as requested but they let slip he did not. Every time he passes on a job the car goes back !!! When will he learn ?
I will report back the findings when they contact me today.

What is going on ? Now another phonecall ' rear brake pads are shot and rear carrier has corroded beyond use '

And I guess the safe thing to do is get both sides done. At least I may have a functioning handbrake. That will be useful as given the expense I may need to leave it parked for a while to avoid paying for petrol !

Er, sorry to piss on your parade, but the handbrake is seperate from the pads!! and calipers!!

Get them to remove the disks and check that the handbrake expanders are not seized as they do!!

Sorry it was the rear handbrake pads that had disintegrated and the carrier onto which the rear caliper and handbrake attaches has corroded at the point the handbrake bits attach (tech speak).
