    Advice Needed On My Clutch

As Above i need some advice on the clutch of my Aby, I have had loads of advice from people on this subject, So after reading most of the threads on here ref clutch problems and weighing up the advice supplied from garages i am seeking the best adivce from this forum the problem i have is the clutch pedal has been playing up for a while and now it;s given up all togeather the problem was the pedal was not returning unless you put your foot under it, then the bite would take after the pedal was lifted an inch and now the pedal doesn't return at all and no bite. So i replaced the slave cylinder and the master is 3 yrs old so i'm now wondering if it could be the clutch itself if so where would be the best place to source one and would sach's or Luk be the ones to go for.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch pedal pushrod? My clutch had a bite point too high up, so I adjusted the master cylinder pushrod. Adjustment moved the bite point and when adjusted too far, the pedal would stick down like you're experiencing. A little adjustment in the other direction and its been fine since. Might be worth a try, before you think about clutch replacement.

As Steve says... sounds like a pushrod issue - if the adjustment is good, it hasn't started to break at the rubber bush has it?

How do you go about adjusting the position?

The clutch master cylinder has a threaded rod and so the adjustment is achieved by moving the lock nut along the threaded rod.

If someone could post a photo, it'll be clearer.

Piccy from t'interweb showing a clutch pushrod. The clevis end goes onto rear of pedal; the domed portion would be inside clutch master cylinder. Screw the rod out (ie away from rear of pedal) to take up slack/raise bite point. HTH

Replaced master, slave and new clutch and bite point is a bit too high for my liking. Will definitely be having a crack at adjusting this. Cheers.

I went for an OEM sachs clutch kit. Was very happy - all parts good quality and got it for a good price. If you source the p/n's from the sachs catalogue you can ask motor factors / parts shops to get it for you. I did that until one place did it at cost price.. or very close to it

Adjustment is made with a 10mm or 11mm spanner from memory on a 3B. It's not the easiest nut to get at. You will need to remove the trim panel above the pedals and lie on your back with a torch to see what you are doing. Good luck!

having two wrists on one arm certainly helps, lol!
if you have trouble getting a spanner onto the nut properly, try cutting a section out of the ring end to allow it to get past the pushrod (cheap spanner obviously)

There's a return spring on the pedal to plus check the flexibility hose and bleeding has been done properly.

Had a chat with Doug at Mrc today while picking up my sons car and he seems to think it's the clutch pressure plate that could be the problem as it's a common fault when the pedal doesn't return. I will still check the advice given , any thoughts on the pressure plate.

Just in case it is not the clutch plate, check this first:

I had intermittent clutch pedal not returning, which I finally diagnosed as a pinhole in the clutch fluid pipe hard-line that runs round the gearbox to the slave cylinder. This was leaking fluid and allowing air into the system. Does the pedal improve if you pump it? If so check for leaks...

                          HTH

                          Cheers

No the pedal does not improve when you pump, will check that . it was a bit wet around the top of the box when i changed the slave.

Funny thing today i went down to start the car to keep the battery good and i pumped the clutch pedal a few times and it started to return a bit and then fully, took it for a spin around the block parked back up pedal didn't return pumped it a few times and returned fully again thinking a leak somewhere in the system as suggested by Steve aka Fat Audi 80
