  • Low speed drone

    Hi,

My car has developed a droning sound at low speeds(or at least I cant hear it at higher speeds)

The noise starts as i accelerate and then I get a reverse of the sound as i lift off.

Just hoping for a few ideas as to probable causes. Should I get this looked looked at immediately? Am I gonna cause more expense by driving it?

It would be nice to have just a single month of S2 ownership without having to spend a fortune.

Starting to get a bit fed up with the old girl at the moment.

    Cheers for any help guys
    Jon

wheelbearing ? propshaft central bearing ? Like all noises ( and I am now an expert with the RS2) you really need to let a someone with sense hear it.
Do you have a local specialist you trust ?

If you can replicate the noise when stationary in neutral then propshaft wins over wheel bearing which will only make a noise on the move

if it sounds like it is coming from the front of the car or gearbox area then it could be the gearbox, i had a whine/drone that was speed dependant but if i took it out of gear at any speed the noise was still there. it started out as barely audible then got worse over the next 3 /4 weeks. it turned out to be the crown wheel and pinion and i basically needed a new gearbox. i dont think ill tell you how much it all cost as i dont like to remind myself, im only just out of therapy beacuse of it.

Think ill book it in to get looked at.

If its the gearbox then im gonna drive it into the nearest wall.

Cant take much more of this car. Think my love affair may be coming to an end.

Could be rear diff, wheel bearing maybe, or propshaft cv joints (btdt).
Does it just happen in gear or all the time?
