    Gear box worries...

    Hi all...

Well, after my car running for almost a year without a single thing going wrong, im geting scared somethign will go wrong.

Im worried about my gear box, its getting harder and harder to put into reverse and when i do i hear .. umm.. metal v metal contact/knocking.

    6 speed, 180k.

Anything i can do to make it last longer or fix it? maybe its my clutch?

I never do off the line sharp starts to i dont hammer the clutch if you know what i mean.

any advice would be appreciated as im clueless ( as always)...

Not sure it'll help much but have you replaced the fluid/checked for leaks? Also hows the clutch pedal? Have you changed the brake/hydraulic fluid recently too?

Failing that, i'm also clueless but plenty of others here will be able to offer (useful) advice

Clutch might be dragging a little, with most cars reverse gears don’t have a syncro, hence they tend to crunch. Not sure if Audi boxes do though..

Out of curiosity try pressing the clutch, select 1st gear, then select reverse and see does it still happen. It’s something i always do anyway for mechanical sympathy but it might help

ooo thanx for all your reply's

dosnt matter what gear i go from it still is hard to push it into reverse. it hardly every crunches but i do hear a metal v metal contact coming from under the car.

I have not changed any fluids regarding brakes / gearbox since i had it.

I guess i should do this first?

i can confirm there is no sign of leaks.

I would change gearbox oil and brake fluid to ensure your getting full movement when your pressing the pedal, fresh fluid never does any harm and is cheap to do..... the clutch fluid is taken from the brake resevoir so best to do brakes and clutch.

I've always found the 6spd to be clunky, probably related to the over elaborate gear linkage, I'd double check that linkage is nice and secure and not dragging/rubbing against anything in the surrounding area, there's an angled bracket supporting the hydr hose which can sometimes become loose, or people sometimes can't be bothered putting it back on if they've been working down there, (spend a bit of time trying to get it back when I took the g/box out to do the clutch), one last option is to disconnect the linkage , get a set of mole grips and manually go through the gears from above, though sounds like yours doesn't need that step at the moment !.

As others have suggested probably checking/renewing fluid should help, but I don't think it'll get rid of the clunking, I wouldn't worry until you can't get it through the reverse gate..

I've had the same problem once, and it was the linkage. Get the car up and look at the linkage when it's put into reverse. It might hit something that's make it hard to get into reverse.

                          Cheers,
                          Roger

I took it to tims and he put a litre of oil into it (it was that low!)

Didnt get a chance to get the linkage checked out, maybe another time.

I notice now when i drive it had the gear stick leather casing gets warm lol.. maybe because oil it geting to top of the box.. no idea.. just what ive noticed

the clutter noise i was worried about is supposed to be the bearing doing its job.. must of been me parranoid so im happy

It's always a good idea to change box and diff oil, audi say it's fitted for life what rubbish, everytime i have changed box oil that's done over 100k i have notiched an improvement in gear change quality. Just remember to undo the filler plugs first!!! And the 6 speed box isn't brilliant going into reverse.
