    EDL and Torsen rear

Having read over a few threads regarding installing the V8 rear torsen to a car with EDL which seem to say it will cause torsen to break I want to glean a little information on what has happened other and what could be done to help reduce any possible risk/damage

Some background, I had a spare V8 Torsen from a few years back and my current daily driver is a B7 A4 DTM, 2.0TFSI Quattro, any time I have pushed her hard out of junctions the inside rear would spin and little or no sideways action would happen or worse understeer! So I bought a rear diff housing and machined down the left side of the V8 diff to fit the A4 bearing and built a Torsen rear for the A4, along with turning and milling some CV joint spacers and building the A4 crown onto the Torsen and setting preload and back lash with new bearings

I fitted this yesterday and so far all has been excellent, initial testing yesterday with ESP off showed was able to produce neutral slide on throttle balance and push into oversteer and pushing out of a T junction the car hooked up well and pull the tail around nicely with out any loss of power. But I have been cautious to test yet with the ESP on.

I know this isn't in a S2 or even a TYP89 chassis or of the right vintage for our forum however I don't think any B7 forum would have any experience with the V8 Torsen unit

I think the Torsen will fight the ESP / EDL or whatever acronym they are using now. I'm sure some of the C4 S6 guys will have some real world experience
You don't need it with two Torsens anyway

I salute your dedication, that was no small undertaking. As above the electronic nanny aid and the torsen will end up working against each other, personally i would find a way to disable it permanently.

I disagree! As someone who has done this on my S6 I can state that they complement one another. I'm running just a chipped ECU, 7a camshafts & 3" exhaust so no high horsepower monster. Not too much stress for a fragile Torsen to contend with. Adult driven so not alot of Hooning about. Remember that the EDL function is to prevent wheel slip, potentially adding a layer of safety to protect the Torsen.
          My 2 cents.

Error, I do think I could live without ESP and having given the car a roundabout to tackle I like way she drives Au Natural now!

Mcandmar, I work in a small precision engineers, Im the mechanical engineer over the tool makers and apprentices, most of my lunch times are spent working on homers so costs nothing but being hungry to quitting time!

Pry4sno, I have a 90 with 400nm of torque with the V8 torsen and it survived alot of launching! I even blew up the 01A and diff still going well, same time I do fear getting stuck after showing off a launch. I was going to upgrade the 10.9 bolts that hold the diff together with 12.9 but decided despite giving potentially more clamping froce they could be more brittle and prone to catastrophic failure

A1qship, its the sudden jabs the EDL system can cause I understand causes the issue with the torque spikes and the momentum. However if you have been running safly with it for a while I have some confidence now

My small contribution to this is that the 2004/5 etc Subaru Legacy Spec B (manual gearbox) and the 3.0 H6 Autos have a torsen rear diff and whatever Subaru's version of EDL fitted.

The only downside I could report was excessive rear brake pad wear when doing a track day while the traction control was in normal mode.

With the traction control switched off the car felt more rear biased and the rear brake pad wear slowed.
