    What Gearbox? Help!!!

Following GTI this year, have decided definitely need new gearbox for my car. Toms times were most impressive but he is managing 70 in second and 110 in third. I still have N/A box in my car which only manages 55 in 2nd and 80 in 3rd, so it has to go (although 4.55 with 2 gear changes quite respectable).
Problem is which box to go for? Box Tom uses good for the speed but is notoriously weak (3B 5 speed).
SO what box do I go for?
My own box seems to be lasting really well with the power. THe other option is to possibly change the diffs to a 3.15 final drive. IS this possible and where would I find these?
    Many thanks

Tricky, i would say the 5 speed 3B box, even though they can be weak, there's quite a few in availbility.
If you go 6speed then consider the extra cost of finding the associated gear linkages.

Another option can be a 016 gearbox from the earlier types. They have vacuum activated diff lock. And no torsen. These boxes have been installed in the sportquattro's aswell. So proven strength, IIRc they have the same final drive aswell. But I'm not sure about that.
If i ever build a track / sprint race monster I'm going to install this gearbox.

The Audi 200 / 016 gearbox has torsen in it.

I have looked into this box and unfortunately the ratios are very close to those I have at present, so it seems a lot of work for not much gain. Must be something out there?

How about the 20v URQ box? or will it be virtually the same as your current one.
Does anyone know what an aby will do in second gear? I think as far a sprinting is concerned the 3b ratios will be more suited, but as said before are a tad weaker.

Do you have any vids of your runs on sunday chris? really wanted to see it but couldnt make the sunday.

ABY theoretically should do about 70 in 2nd gear.

Ive attached a calculator from a friend at work for calculating in gear speeds etc.

Changing to the six speed can prove difficult and expensive. Have looked at the possibility and may have to go that way but would prefer to stay with 5 speed. FInd it strange that no gear kits can be bought for the Audi.

you have the options to use the URQ ...ratio 3.889-1 after 1988 with thorsen, before without thorsen. i have sutch tranny, both types at home, and i will use big power on this....

...You can use the pre '88 (WR) Ur quattro 016 non Torsen box, but avoid the very early box, up to 1984. They have a big gap between 2nd and 3rd, not nice at all. The 016 box fitted to the Audi 200 quattro, between 1985 - 1987 is also suitable. Both boxes are 3.89:1 compared to your 4.11:1.

Internal ratios are slightly lower than any S2, ABY or 3B, but with higher final drive, you should achieve approx. 68 in 2nd and 106 in 3rd with 15" wheels.

If your thinking of going to the expense of changing internals, why not just adapt an RS4 box, it has been done somewhere though i cannot find the link, and it has the added feature of much stronger gears and an external cooler with pump driven oil

This link could be helpful. THink I can get a fairly new S4 box for £500. Not sure if that is a good price?
                      Cheers

Why change box? Lower gearing=quicker car 0-60 could be faster if you only needed 1 shift, but not necessary. 1/4 mile times would go up with a box with "taller" gearing.
I think this car uses a box like yours, and it's quick : http://www.illegalracer.com/filmer/jonus.avi

Why change gearing? A 6-speed will only slow your car down......

Link works for me. Both left click and "save as". Have you tried both?
