  • Help!!! Wheel fitting issues!

    Hello all. I'm state-side and have a 1991 Coupe Q and I'm doiing the 3B engine swap.

I have converted to the 5X112 S2 wheel hubs and,

I bought some 18 inch wheels that are 8.5 wide with 35mm offset.

I was told 8.5 will not fit according to the tyre shop.

I have seen other postings of guys on the Forum fitting 8.5 18 wheels but no definitive answer on tyre sizes, and spacing/ rubbing issues.

Can anyone give me a comprehesive answer on the 18 8.5 35mm wheel and tyre fittmnet issue? I beg you!

How wide of a tyres can be fitted to the wheel without rubbing on the car?

Will spacers be needed? Etc etc.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Regards,
    joe marconi

I have just put a set of 18" RS4 reps on my CQ20 after a hub swap. I am running with 225/40 tyres and have about 4-5mm clearance on the track rod ends!!!!! That's it.
No spacers, nothing. I cannot go any larger than that without causing a major problem

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Cheers

PS. I think the wheels are 8J
    Dark Grey Avant
    RS2 FARB
    Powerflex Front wishbone bushes
    Alloy Subframe Bushes

Joe there is no reason why the wont fit. Currently I have 17 x 8.5" wheels with 225/45 17's on them. there is a small amount of clearance from track rod and 18's will fit fine too

So, your off set is also 35mm?

        No rubbing? No buffing?

Also, can you go any more wider in tyre width???

Or, are you maxed-out with the 245's?

        THanks for your reply.

Opps, I meant to type 225's. Not 245!

What is your off-set? 8j means 8 inches, right?

How much space do you clear the rods by?

            Thanks for your input!
            regards,

              Joe,

8j means 8 inches wide, my wheels are 8.5" wide. I reckon i could get 235/40 17's on in place of 225's. to fit 245 or 255's i would need some spacers I think. when i got the wheels they have 245's on and they fouled on the track rods.

With new tyres clearance was about 5mm on standard brake discs. I have AP custom bells fitted which are slightly thicker so I would have about 8-10mm clearance on new tyres now on the front. the rear isnt so much of a problem because there is no steering arm.

I occasionally get the tyre rub one bit of the arch liner when manouvering on full lock but that is it. When I change my tyres I am looking at trying some 10mm spacers with 255's up front
