  • Stud Conversion

Been covered a few(!) times but I'm just interested what the latest is on this.

I currently have radius seat wheels and am looking to get some taper seat wheels too. I run rear spacers but not on track; between 10 and 15mm.

As I'm looking to have to buy a set of 10x40mm & 10x50/55mm bolts, I was thinking about just biting the bullet and doing this, for roughly the same money.

Any suggestions as to where I can get good wuality, long studs and the 2 types of nuts at a decent price?

I need to check but I think I'll be looking at 80mm studs to accomodate the rear spacers and give a few extra threads in case things come loose.

Do people loctite their studs in to a given torque?

Funny… I am thinking about this for the S4… BTDT on the S2 some years back… the biggest headache I found was with different wheel types and that mixture of radius and tapered studs required to match with wheels… and a solution for locks. I ended up finding (somewhere - the name Grayston rings a bell) a special washer that converted taper mounting studs to the correct radius fitment for the wheel so I just had to remember to add spacers when running OE (winter) wheels and forget them running aftermarket tapered wheels. I ran aftermarket tapered wheel locks with or without the washer as required.

I did not run hub spacers on mine - I have 50mm stud protruding from hub - I torqued them in with thread lock at something like 120Nm using the dual nut technique - I couldn't find studs with a hex key insert at the time but they are available in some sizes. Never had a stud come out when buzzing off wheels.

I'm fairly sure I got my studs from Rally Design (about £35).
They're not listed on the website though so perhaps give them a call.

For standard seat nuts I'm using VW transporter ones.

I asked this a little while ago and after a few suggestions and a fair bit of research I went for these with both nut types, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-VW-Po...item2ecc64dc36 unfortunately the price has gone up a bit, I got a set will both types of nut for less than the price in that listing. The quality of the nuts and the studs is miles better than any of the others I've seen in the flesh, worth the extra investment IMO.

Yes, that's a fair bit of wedge!

          I currently have:-
          • 40x OEM radius seat
          • 10x 50mm radius seat
          • 20x 40mm radius seat
          • 2x 10mm spacers
          • 2x 15mm spacers
I'd need to sell most of that lot (excluding one set of spacers) to fund it all.

Those look very similar to those sold by track studs where I got mine from here: http://www.track-studs.com/ProductInfo/stud_landing.cfm

They are a great product, I got both tapered and radius nuts so I can swap wheels easily. They have a shoulder so they can be tightened into the hub with some loctite, they have never come loose.

These look to be good VFM.

I am looking at 60mm front studs, 80mm rear studs and then 20 off of each nut.

Looks like a set of front and rear bolts will be about £40, so I'll add up what I have and see how the numbers look... Killer is the 2x sets of nuts

Those do look like good value, hadn't spotted them, the two sets of nuts make things expensive but needs must. Make sure you get screw through nuts as opposed to capped ones should you come across some low ET wheel you like.

I've emailed the seller (I think he's a member on here too) with my requirements, so see what comes back...

Ended up going for an 80mm stud from MAPS on eBay

                      http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...64469&alt=web*

Fitted these by coupling an OE bolt to a partially applied wheel nut and torqued to 25Nm with threadlock. 2 nut method would of course work too.

80mm is far longer than required without spacers, so the 60mm version could be used from PW Motorsport, especially up front, as 5-10mm spacers at the back are a nice touch.
