  • Can I mix 235/40/18 and 225/40/18 tyres?

I can't can I? Because the rolling surface circumference is going to be slightly different, which wouldn't play nicely with quattro?
just want to clear this up because I have a good offer for 2 of each Toyo Proxes
    thanks.

**edit** I just found this thread on Audizine that says it's fine as long as the difference is under 3%

There was a link to this site, which shows the difference (details here are for my A4)

difference in circumference seems to be 1.24% if my calculation is right
    (100/2,026.96) * (2,026.96 - 2,001.82)

It's roughly 4mm difference in radius, or a half-worn tread.
So probably technically acceptable, but I wouldn't do it on a 4wd vehicle.

Probably different tyre manifature brands of the same size would give as much variation. I would do it.

thanks lads. I'm on the fence. currently i'm going to end up with different brands with slightly different tread depths front and back if I replace just the two fronts. But I have the option of getting 4 brand new Toyo Proxes for a very good price because someone changed their car and has them sitting in storage doing nothing. hmmmmm....

The centre diff has to compensate for the different speed of rotation between front & rear axle, which is does anyway but you will be putting it under continual load, generating heat and potentially additional wear. I would say its fine if your gearbox oil is good quality & in good order. Personally I'd just get the right size rubber

I'd go for the four new and keep the better two used ones as spares.
Then if you do get a damaged non-repairable tyre you can put a matching pair on that axle.

erm.. here's something that I should have asked at the start. Has anyone got an opinion on Toyo Proxes T1Rs? I thought initially that they were T1 Sports.

I always say the same thing when people ask this question....unless you have a very good reason for doing otherwise run four tyre's the same size and preferably brand on a quattro, it surprising how much difference there can be between different manufacturers.

Even though I have a set on my Compomotives I'm kinda with Alex on the Toyo's, the only thing they have going for them is the price new. 888's/R1R's are awesome though IMO, however their not really a practical choice for an everyday car.

The Dunlops Dave mentions are a great tyre.
