  • Newbie!

    Alright people,

new to this forum (as my poor no. of posts will dictate!)

Am a huge Audi S/RS fan, and at the end of next summer am thinking of an S2. Will have about 5-6k to spend hopefully!

Just coming on here to get advice really, and to see if i still want an S2 come Aug/september '06!

    Cheers

Hiya and welcome to the forum. Take a look through the FAQ's and S2central.net which has a buyers guide on too.

        nice1 guys!

Found an insurance quote for one, and i think its sensible enough (when im 21- £1300 fully comp 10month bonus accelerator). Now ive gotta start looking through reviews and to see what a "good one" is. my dad told me to watch out for the rear seats as apparently they perish from the sun through the back window?

Haha! Yeah thats what I told my dad, surely worn turbos, rust nackered gearbox will be more on my mind than bloody seats!!!

I've had a good look through there, seems to me that the general consensus is that their good, reliable cars. But they are all at least 10 year old cars. Will be mighty different to my 2004 Clio anyhow!

              S2 PTH.

Hi matey, I am a newby to these cars too, I have only had one for 4 months and the best bit is I do not regret it a single bit. Money has been spent but what do you expect when you go out and buy an old car.

You have got lots of good driving fun to look forward to.

              Cheers

Just be aware this is a rather addictive car... and it'll spoil you in terms of performance. I went out in a mates Civic Type R last week and it felt pretty slow! And then there's the upgrades...

I've had my S2 for not much more than 2 months - nothing drastic has happened to it yet, though if you're mechanically inclined that will be a major plus (I'm not, though I'm beginning to wish I was - MRC guys, want an apprentice? ) The forum here is full of people who know just abouts anything about an S2 there is to know - tonnes of good stuff to read up on just abouts anything S2 if you use the search tool!

In short, if you're looking at getting an S2 you've come to the right place. Good luck in the search - and a tip, if you're using admiral try a quote with your mum as an 'additional other'.

                Cheers

You are doing the right thing and planning before you buy. These cars really need a "slush" fund if you want to run it properly. You SHOULD budget on spending £1500 - £3000 a year running it. I know this sounds a lot, but you have to remember tyres are £100 a corner and will only last 20,000 miles if you are lucky. They drink petrol for fun and absolutely neck it when pressing on!

However the grin you get from this car will be remembered forever. The look on porsche drivers faces when you sit up the **** of them in their £60k car is priceless.

Take your time to find a good one. They are still out there. I would recommend an ABY as opposed to a 3B as they have a stronger 6 speed gearbox, overboost function and are a little better in overall refinement IMO. With your budget you should be able to get an ABY with 100k miles on it and in pretty good nick.

Definitely look for a FSH with main dealer or a specialist. It also really needs to come from a caring owner that has spent a lot of money on it. Anyone that say it is cheap to run and has had no work done is lying. You should see bills and lots of them!

                  Any questions just ask.

P.S. Come along to one of the gatherings this year and meet us, you will see lots of different cars and be able to learn a lot.

                  Cheers,

                  Steve.

Cheers for all the replies. I've been away for christmas, hence the late reply.

Thanks for spelling it out steve, as to how much they cost to run etc. Im sure having the standard 16inch wheels wouldn't require £100/corner for tyres though (or hope not)! As to 100k car, how does it rack up? Its just I keep thinking that people who bought them second had at about 3/4 years old will have got them for a good price, and probably ragged them...? I mean a 100k bog-o audi 80 or A4/A3 etc would be ok, as it would just be used as a motorway rep-mobile, but the S2 being high performance surely a bit tired? I hope this is not the case, as I really want one. Been looking around at 2.0l turbos for a while (old scoobys, GTiRs etc) and 99% of them are sheds! Plus I'd have every nova/saxo up my **** 24/7; but the S2, they wouldn't know what that is! Plus, at my age I'm not supposed to like cars like this yet!

I've also had a look at http://www.amcarsquattro.co.uk/ (turn your speakers up when it loads up- i get the hairs on the back of my neck!) There is a very tidy one on there for sale, well two actually, but one of them is a left hooker! The 8grand one seems good, although maybe a bit out of my price range.

                    I've got a few questions...

How does it feel to drive? A friend has told me that they handle well but feel dead like all audis of old, due to the 50/50 torque split. However I read somewhere (probably on here!) that they the diff changes the torque split as much as 70/30, so surely they cant be that bad!

Also, what is the acceleration like? Do you get much of a kick from the turbo or is the engine pretty torquey throughout the range? Recently went in a '04 911 turbo, brilliant car, so so fast, but for me, too smooth and quiet! Then engine just feels like a bit 6litre racing unit, rather than a blown 3.6/3.8 (whatever it is).
To me, the sensation of a 280bhp Sunny GTiR was more entertaining, and because of the unsilenced exhaust, acceleration, in 1st and 2nd anyway, felt very impressive indeed! ...basically what I am trying to get at is this: is the turbo there for a sensation and acceleration (ie, like the GTiR) or just to increase the litreage by 1.4 times and go faster (like the 911) ? Because I really want the thrill of coming on boost like the sunny gave you, not so much the sheer power of a bigger engine (might sound mad to some!!!)

                    Thanks for reading my essay!

                    Cheers

Ps: I would like to come to some of your meets. Live in Cardiff, but as of next week will be in Loughborough at Uni until the summer. I'll keep logging on to see whats going on, as I would really like to see one of these cars for myself- to see if i still want one!!!

Oh c'mon Steve, the 3B is for real rough-around-the-edges men

The biggest cost of these cars is the extra money you'll want to spend unneccesarily on them... as per wear items, they're not overly expensive (I found 17" toyo's at £75 a corner for instance) which can't be more than for any other car.. however, there's alot of things that can go wrong and it seems the smallest jobs on these things take forever, really racking up the labour cost. That said, my S2 has been cheaper to run than my bro's 02 Golf TDi so far... excluding fuel of course!

Definitely sort out a drive, a good chance to see if it's a car you'd enjoy. Can't speak for a stock setup, but with a remap I think anything is possible - lowend grunt or a high-RPM turbo kick, as desired. Recently I floored it at 2000rpm in 2nd on a loose surface, had good traction till the turbo kicked and in an instant all 4 wheels were spinning. The great thing is, in a FWD I'd have shifted into 3rd and still been doing 20mph. I shifted into 3rd after just a few seconds of wheelspin and was doing 55! I love 4WD

This is definitely a car that has some balls, and a bit of an 'old skool' drive - not one of those playstation genre machines that'll practically drive itself! It all depends what you want. My friends don't call it 'The Beast' for nothing.

                      cheers

Just went out in an M-reg Coupe. think it was a 2.2, but it had alot of head work, cams etc.
It drove pretty well, not that fast but, the noise it made! woahhhh

You know that Kaiser cheifs song, every day i love you less and less... well the opposite appiles to these 5cylinder audis!!!

I've found some nice ones on autotrader, especially estates!
