  • Who's good at pub quizzies?

G'day all. I've been living in Western Australia now for 3 years, but all is not well. Oh no it isn't. The weather's great, the people are friendly, the beer is cold, the food is good, the houses are cheap and the girls are stunning. But ... you CANNOT buy an Audi Coupe in the land of plenty!!!! Shocking eh? And, what's more outrageous, my adopted country's ruling political party has decided that no cars built after 1988 can be imported.

But I do have a cunning plan. Oh yes I do. There is a scheme called SEVS (Specialist or Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme) whereby you can import a vehicle which wasn't commercially sold to the Australian market (such as the VW Corrado which does now feature on the SEVS list). It appears the Audi Coupe wasn't sold here either, nor was the S2 Avant. I can only guess they must have all been sold before the Aussies got a look in.

Sooooo, before I can even think about looking for a suitable S2 Coupe in the UK to ship over, I have to navigate my way through the red tape.

It's a long story isn't it? Hopefully not too dull. Anyway, here I am now with my SEVS application form, in front of me ... and here are the first 6 questions.

    1. Make:
    2. Model:
    3. Typical VIN:
    4. Manufacturer’s model code for vehicle:
(eg VT for a Commodore or AU for a Falcon)
    5. Build date range (used vehicles only): from …… / ………… to …… / …………
    month year month year
    6. Country of origin:

Ah ... can anyone help me with Questions 3-6? Too technical for me. It's an S2 Coupe I'm after, but this application has to cover the whole Audi Coupe model range (88-96).

I need to support the Application with some kind of evidence that the Coupe is collectable and a classic. I've ordered a few back issues of Audi Driver, but if anyone knows of any other recent press articles, I'd love to hear about them.

    Really hope you can help!

And if anyone's got an S2 Coupe wrapped in cotton wool in their shed (sorry garage), and they're thinking they could really use that cotton wool for something else ... please keep it just a little bit longer! Good on ya!

It may be worth talking to Graham. He moved from the UK to Adelaide last year, and took his S2 Coupé with him.
This thread may of interest to you.

There was a recent article in audi driver about 2 or 3 months ago reviewing old audi S2's with the forums help which should help.

I guess model code will be B4, check s2central.net depends on year etc. Think there may be a VIN decoder which will give you alot of the info

Many thanks, I will speak to Graham. And thanks for the thread - there are some nasty compliance issues there I hadn't imagined. He was probably able to bring his in because he had owned it for a year or over. Btw, I have seen an S2 for sale in Perth on www.carsales.com.au ... but the asking price is approx £14k ... although it does have low mileage. Cars generally don't depreciate as fast here.

Wasn't the car listed under Audi 80 down under?

f you wanted any paperwork e-mailing to you i can send you copies.
I will post part of what i PM'd you:
Ground clearance: My exhaust was 89mm and needed to be 100+mm off the ground, which ****ed me off when they uuhhhh and ahhh the Galliardo which sits at about 70mm but overlooked by ozzie law in general, aswell as ferrari's etc- pretty car specific problem, but worth checking as its a biatch to do when the S2 community is 13K miles away.
Child Anchor Points. To fit Ozzie compliant anchors (3 off) to a coupe involves a custom fabricated Strut brace for the rear and the anchor points are mounted to that as the spare wheel hinders any attachment points to the back panel, have not seen an Ozzie S2 to see how Audi got around that problem originally, but hey its a strut brace and i wasnt complaining other than i now have less boot space and it cost 600 dollars+GST
Cracked disc--Car specific, annoyed at that as the car was fine when the shippers collected it- the brakes had just been fitted-600 dollars each disc (AP 315x28mm 8 groove disc.).
Brake Hoses I was robbed a bit but it cost 100 dollars as my Goodrich St/St flexes although better than El-(Not so)Cheapo rubber hoses, didnt have the Australian compliant stamp markings on them.
Engine Number- the little **** of a chief inspector in his starch ironed overalls came over and i said Morning in a friendly sort of way to which he replied "what is that car, its not in my book it cannot be allowed as they never brought these to OZ" i replied they did bring 25 into OZ and i found it in his book- he took one glance at the engine and said "cannot see the engine number-FAIL" and walked off- make sure you know where it is and how to view it-(Just above Turbo on head behind rubber pressure pipe from the intercooler))
Then once all is sorted another permit and another inspection fee of 57 Dollars, it finally passed 3 months later--By sheer luck 5 days before my import license ran out--if that happens they charge you it all again
Now the fun starts, once my car passed it had to be fitted with an Ozzie compliance plate as it is from UK and doesnt have one, as it passed the test this is their responsibility to find the correct plate for this car---LOL Audi OZ couldnt even identify it, they thought it was a mock up . So Transport SA have issued me with an exemption certificate which they are not allowed to issue legaly, and the certificate is valid but i am not allowed to have it, but have to carry it in the car at all times-- All i know is its their problem not mine.
              Hope this helps

Oh BTW dont forget to get a proper looking UK receipt, there is no way they can check it but if it gets here without one they will charge you the tax based on the Australian value--38K dollars
