Realistically I have up to about £16k, maybe 17k depending on what the Evo goes for. Have only had a quick nose around and have seen a couple of nice RS4 Avants, 100k+ plus from about 16k, a very nice one in nology blue, but that was sold, plus havent got the £££ in my hand yet. Tempted on an RS2 but have to admit the RS4 looks more agressive to me.

If I were after 300-350, maybe 400bhp in an RS2 or RS4 or similar guises what ££ would I (roughly) be looking at respectively?

As for mpg on the Evo, when I drove it back from Warrington (im in Epsom in Surrey) I managed 27mpg but I was taking ti very easy as I wanted to learn how to drive it properly first. Thats the best I ever got!! Around town prob 15mpg, boot it and between 6 and 9 mpg at a guess! Evo 9's are better on economy due to the newly designed mivec engine, equal power but better economy

Can I just say thanks for the friendly welcome. I put the same post up on www.rs246.com and have had one reply:

Welcome, I'm not convinced you've found the right forum, your journey will be a long one judging by your current line up but we are a friendly bunch, enjoy.

Now I read that as "oh dear, an Evo owner and he has a tacky van as well, you're not the kind of person we want on here" (I may be totally wrong of course, and im prob just being a bit defensive as the "new boy")

Thing is my username may be Russboy, but im 31, had a successful career in IT for 10yrs, as well as being a member of Surrey Special Constabulary, and chucked it all in to set up my own business, which I have now been running (along with my business partner though I might add) for 2 and a half years, so Mr.Chav, im not!

Stock figures you'd be looking at:

RS2 - 315bhp, remapped with a few mods to ~370bhp and lots o' torque. Would be well within your budget.

RS4 - 380bhp I believe (?) and remap to 420 if I'm correct. I suspect there's no mods needed, so it's just the remap costs.

Really it depends on what you want, either the old-skool look and I5-20VT motor or something a bit newer. I suspect you'll find the RS2 slightly better on economy, but then I've never owned an RS4. "Best" economy I ever got was 9mpgs average over 6 laps of Castle Coombe
AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

9 is quite impressive. I magnaged 11 when I first got the car and was showing it to my mates! That was standard and on the road over 80 miles!

Figures on the tuning look about right, although MRC do some tasty upgrades for S4/RS4 so you can get some serious power out of it, it'll cost though, hybrid turbos, ceramic coated exhaust manifolds etc. etc. would be outside of budget on an RS4 but you could build a serious S4 for that, something approaching Doug's or Mihnea's.

We can't forget the GT3071 on an I5 though (Ross), be a nice upgrade to an RS2 but approaching sacrilege in some peoples' opinions! Can't argue with the figures (or spoolup advantages!).

We know your not a chav I mean what chav choses those BBS alloys!

For your money you have available i'd consider an RS4 but they have weak gearboxes when modded for high power / torque

RS2 has more character and really is a drivers car and is more stealthy , the RS4 though has virtually no lag and is really smooth.............. damn i reliving my driving experience of Pickey's car now!

Regarding BHP, a stock RS2 spend roughly £500 on an MRC remap and get 360-370 bhp depending on engine condition. Up the levels with a larger 3" exhaust and new conrods to take more torque.

Over 400 bhp, get an 3071r turbo, larger injectors, conrods etc etc mini engine rebuild basically to make sure it can cope with the torque output of the I5

The one at 67k miles event though it's 2k more than the red one looks good!

To find them under 20k is a good because most are 20k or over especially on pistonheads.

Well orig idea of selling the Evo and the van was to hopefully not spend as much on an Audi estate, so maybe im in fantasy land considering an RS4.

Mmmm, S2 Avant, S4 Avant, S6 Avant? oh hell, I dont know

Go and test drive them. S2 Avant / RS2 is top of that list but obviously i'm biased as i own an Avant.

You have the price range of going for an RS4 which is a super sweet car but it's expensive.

                    Pays your money..................................

Welcome stranger with japanese toy an dogs etc etc

I personally don't have much truck with the A4 based S4/RS4 series for some reason - not as much character about them as the older S2/RS2... That and they have the balsawood suspension which will set you back a small fortune when the joints start creaking. Don't get me wrong, there are some mighty nice examples about for big money. I have a notion that buying a cheap RS4 will soon be followed by lots of repair bills - and the tuning path is much more expensive than the I5 turbo engines.

The old S4/S6 Avant is perhaps your best choice - it is a good deal bigger than the Audi 80 based S2/RS2 so a little less dynamic shall we say and a bit heavier but still has the wonderful I5 turbo engine and almost identical drivetrain. Easily chipped in stock trim to 270-280bhp and has all the RS2 upgrades and beyond available when you want.

Other advantage of the old S4/S6 in the UK (versus S2/RS2) is that they came with the digital aircon system which was never fitted to S2/RS2 in RHD countries.

Certainly the old S2/RS2/S4/S6 choices don't have the same 'wow' factor with your mates compared to an RS4 but if you spent £20k on a modified S2/RS2 it would embarrass the RS4 by quite some margin in the performance department.

Depends what you want outta the car. You pays your money and takes your choice really !

Nice pair of motors! Love the van particularly .... those D90s look just perfect!

Another vote for a C4 chassis S4/S6 avant here - they're exceptionally well-built, strong, and are capable of intergalactic mileages. There are usually a couple of S6 avants on Autotrader - sure there must be a few good ones pop up from time to time! It's a relatively simple process the upgrade the engine to RS2 spec, throw in a good remap and you've got a 340+bhp.

Check this link for an example of what I'm talking about.

Funny but I thought most people on here would have loved the Evo for what it is, pure mechanical power and adrenalin, but people (not just here, everywhere!!) seem to love the van!

It packs power though, not under the bonnet but sit in the back and she'll bloody deafen you!

Sorry, didn't for one moment mean to disrespect the Evo 8 there! Awesomely effective pieces of engineering, and those BBS wheels suit its motorsports pedigree down to the ground.

A traffic officer friend of mine has recently had an Evo 9 FQ-340 on trial with his force. It's the first car I've ever heard him describe as "too fast". Hehe.
