    Hello everyone

Hi guys. My name is luca and im currently looking for a nice well looked after s2 avant or coupe. Currently driving a golf gti edition 30 with revo which is running 300+bhp. Im very happy with the golf but want a bit of a project/hobby car that i can have as a fun weekend car.
Im 21 years old so if anyone knows a good company that will insure me for a reasonable price i'll be very happy.
Would like to spend around £5k on the car and a few k more on bits that need doing/fixing/upgrading.
Dont want to go over £8k for now, i know i will end up doing as i want to keep the car for a very long time
The reason i want an s2 is for the noise of the gorgeous 5 cylinder, and i think they look really nice.
I know nothing about these cars so are there any things to look for when going to look at one to purchase?

Also im based in the north west so if someone could point me in the direction of a good specialist that can keep my car in good health and will look after it when needed.
Sorry for the long post guys, your help is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Luca

Sounds like you've got it all worked out, money is spot on for what you want to achieve and it'll be a completely different animal to a new Golf. Should achieve some great results, shame an RS2 might not be insurable for you as you'll get one for £8k, LHD but for the weekends who cares? As for post length, that's a nice short one You should see some of the posts I've put up when I've got over excited

Insurance wise, I'm 26 and with Greenlight at £500 a year, agreed value, mods like fo like and track day cover @ £50 a time. When I got the car at 22 I was with Smellyphant at about £800, just don't expect a big payout if you bend it as the value of an S2 is pretty open to interpretation, book on mine is £2.5k and it's insured for £6k, which is a fraction of what it's cost but what it's sort of worth.

Hi Luca, welcome to the forums! I'm 23 and insured my Avant + mods with Adrian Flux for £470 ish I think, that's with 1 year NCB as my 5 years is tied up with my main car but they did match the bonus discount to my other policy. They took a bit of beating down but keep trying with the specialist guys and you'll be laughing, definitely less than £1k IMO.

No need to spend anywhere near £5k on the car to be honest, mine's a bit ropey bodywork wise but I paid £2,000 over a year ago.. if you want a nice one there are good ones going for £2.5-3.5k leaving you £1.5k to spend on a remap and the all important brake upgrade!

£5K will buy you a nice example so ignore sharkyboy telling to buy a ropey one and buy a decent one to start with. Then you can start on the rough maths below: -

£600 will get you uprated brakes you need suitable for the power you want at track speeds.

£1000 will get you new springs, uprated dampers, bushes/topmounts and uprated anti roll bars.

£2K will get you around the 360-400BHP mark depending on which turbo and exhaust you choose. Whilst only 100BHP more than the golf, it will beat most things, do it in the wet and if you keep it stealthy rather than chavved, will really annoy porsches and M3's etc when an old Audi 80 passes them

There are some 600+ BHP monsters around but you need to change the rods and bearings and then bolt up a mahoosive turbo

              Cheers n

              Si

P.S. I pay £280 a year fully comp :mischeif: (that's with protected NCB, agreed value, modified and track use) but I am a tad older than you

600bhp will give you something to play with most super cars, but with power will come unrelibility

Agreed, but 360-400BHP should be reliable and still good fun. Also, if you change the rods and bearings anyway, with that BHP comes HUUUUGE torque

Thanks for the replies guys. Will keep trying insurance as thats whats holding me back at the moment. As for the car i budgeted £5k as i would like one in good nick before i start mods etc. I would like to run a safe 350+bhp with decent brakes and suspension etc. Im budgeting around £8k inc car and mods to start with but with everything there is always something else that needs doing when modding.

                          Luca,

The plan you've outlined above is the correct one, based on my experience, close to 50.

Stick with your plan, especially as it appears that you won't be doing much to it yourself i.e. welding a spanner? It is too expensive to have someone put the car back to where a decent one should be from the start. Much cheaper in the long run to buy a decent one and be able to drive it straight away.

By avoiding this "remedial work" expense you can then concentrate your money and you effort on a chip, and front brakes and then possibly front suspension bushes / top mounts, then ARBs Shocks and Springs and then changing the turbo and exhaust etc., etc.. ( No end of possible mods / expense with these cars as you'll come to learn).

When you get one, install a boost gauge to see everything is as it should be and also to help you diagnose the problem if it is not.

While the forum is invaluable and very helpful, a difficult to trap fault saying cutting the boost can be extremely annoying frustrating for an owner. See numerous threads which illustrate this.

Sorry to be so dogmatic, but btdt a number of times at this stage.

HTH you, and doesn't annoy others who might disagree slightly?

One last loaded question have you decided on a Coupe or an Avant?

Finally, I think if you shop around you should get a decent quote? I also think you should try to insist that an Insurer recognises and gives credit for any existing NCB that you might have. The driver/insured earns the bonus surely, not the car?

                          Kind regards.

p.s. Your post wasn't too long.

@Luca - you've found the right place to talk about the mighty S2... Take the time to read up on things like a buyers guide at my site - http://s2central.net - there's some other useful tech resources around as well that specialise on the S2 - like Mike Dewars site - http://www.s2-audi.co.uk - between this forum and those two sites you will learn a lot of important info before buying. Good luck with the search... FWIW - I advise you to find the best car for your money... Yes there are some cheap ones around, but that can be false economy unless you have some radical plans for a project car... For example if you feel the need to paint it luminescent brown then you won't be worrying about getting one with immaculate point... if that makes sense.

It is also worth noting that paying a high price for an S2 doesn't guarantee it's a good one. It's a good idea to keep some money back to fix any niggles.
Get out there and look at as many as you can. You soon start to get an idea of what is good and what is not.
