    Hi welcome to the forum!

You've certainly found the right place for information and 400 bhp+ is the norm for a modified S2 and easily achievable with a few changes.

    You biggest question will be what type of S2 to buy 5 speed 3B ( 1991-1993 ) or 6 speed ABY ( 1993-1996 )

        deffo a coupe

i know that the later 6peed cars had more power straight away , but i know from vag history early engines are more robust, does this apply to an s2

been looking on piston heads for a while seen a few different prices from and to
and seen early and late cars, which would be better from a "ongoing project" point of view, i guess im asking which one has more potential
im quite happy to put money in to it , my rallye is about ten grand in lol

No it does not, a 6 speed ABY is better internally it got stronger main shells and headgasket and crucially better ignition system.

The 3B got slightly stronger rods however.

It would be better to get an ABY if funds allow it however a 3B is just as good but the gearbox is weaker, the head gasket must be replaced
