    Hello some advice wanted

    Hi everybody

I registerd on here a couple of years back when i briefly ownd a 20v coupe.i sold that a while ago and always said i would get a s2 someday but never have! i would love one but need to do some research 1st!

Sorry if i have totaly missed it but i can not seem to find buying guide on here?

Basicaly i have 4-5k to spend for a s2 i need to find out how reliable they are how readly avalible and how cheap parts are? This will be my daily car too is that a bad idea?

im not to shabby with a spanner more than happy to tackle suspension brakes and basicaly any bolt on and off things attached to the engine lol bigger tasks such as headgaskets gearboxs i wouldnt be confident doing neither do i have the space or nessesary tools although in near future when i get a bigger house with a garage id like to get into it more as it would be a gr8 hobby for me.

i guess what i am asking is can i buy one of theese maintain it well and not have to worry too much about huge repair bills i have had money pits in the past and its a awfull thing but modern cars just dont excite me anymore the im suffering with nostalgia i always wanted an s2 i feel like a kid again hehe

thanks for any advice you may have i hope to be a proud s2 owner very soon!

I can't comment on how difficult these cars are to maintain.... As I am useless with a spanner, but what I can say is they are fantastic to drive and IMHO a future classic... look at what UR's are fetchin!

What I can say is that the build quality on these IMO are superb - how many current cars could you put in storage when its 10 years old and covered 72K - leave it in a garage for 6 years without touching it. Take it out, charge the battery and it start 1st time....

Took it for its MOT and all it failed on was a couple of bulbs and the rear brake pipes

i am driving a sensible 2002 mondeo tdci at the moment, i rember thinking my 20v coupe was built very well and was very nice to drive hell of a lot of car for the money!

I am bored with the mondeo now havent had an exciting car for a while now. looking at whats on the market at the moment for 4-5k nothing really stands out to me as a kool and amazing car that would put a smile on my face. plenty of evos scoobys e36s saabs vws etc but they are all too common and have no charater + potential money pits if you get a dog also give in 12 months ill loose money on them.

Buy an s2 which imo as you say a future classis i have no doubts it will put a smile on my face itt has charater its not commen and will hold its value well.

All thats left to convice me in reliability and cost of parts :-D

I think most the folk on here use theirs as a daily driver. As for reliability, I can say mine in the 4 or so years of ownership has had very few issues. It had been sat a while before I got it and occasionally would not start and occasionally cut out. If it wasn't for this forum I would have probably sold it because trying to diagnose an intermittent fault like that really does not excite me! However the answer was right here on the forum and it was fixed next day. I guess what I am saying is that even if it does have an issue, the knowledge on here will help you get it fixed a lot cheaper than you may have to pay (whether in money or time) on another car that does not have such a fantastic forum.

Prices of parts, well it is an Audi, so some parts are expensive, but again this place will help you find cheaper alternatives - by which i mean go straight to the OE manufacturer rather than Audi etc. Be warned though, they can turn into a money pit very quickly if you get the tuning bug! Try to stay away from the project threads!

4-5k should get you a pretty good example. For some reason Avants are really cheap right now so you would get a somewhat tuned and well looked after example for the money, or you would probably get a well looked after std coupe.

Go for it, you know it makes sense!

less reliable the more power you put through them, parts are becomming harder to find and more expensive
