newbie with an Avant not S2 tho

    hi all....
im a newbie who has fallen for the 80 avant.... i was driving a VW mk1 GTI Sportline, when some idiot set her alight after 'trying to steal her'

anyway, i now own a dog (leonberger) and an lovely white audi 80 avant
it has a silly little 1.6 engine (if you can call it that) which i do hope to change in the furture, so may need ideas....

the springs have been cut so rubbs on everything and it has some silly baby blue wheels on it at the mo
but i have brought a set of springs 40mm springs and am currently looking for wheel ideas....
am also on the look out for some leather....

will keep you posted on how she is doing... any tips or advice is more then welcome....

what sort of power does the 1.6 run at?
            is that an easy install?
is the S2 block a big project?

The 1.6 was about 70-75bhp i think. S2 conversion would be a nightmare, youd be better off with a 2ltr or with a bit more work a v6 but you'd have to move mounts etc for that plus youd ahve the headache of wiring in the ecu etc which is a pain in the ****. Best bet get a 2ltr 16v and a decent set of carbs. Although if it was me i'd try find a decent v6 avant as they are cheep as chips and not to difficult to get hold of. 2.6 is 150bhp and 2.8 is 174bhp (although didnt come in fwd avants) which is nippy enough, through a coupe bumper on it and bobs your uncle.

£400-£500 bare miimum if you do it yourself, bear in mind youd have to upgrade brakes and suspension aswell and I just had a swift peek on autotrader just now and the dearest v6 avant is less than £1400... Theres a mint red 1 for 900 quid but its an auto.

go 2l 16v over the v6. not worth it for the extra few hp in juice alone. the 16v can be easily made to outrun a v6.

                    s2 is 16v plus 1 cylinder.

you are aswell to run what you have whilst looking for one of the rarer models if you ask me.

rarer models are 16v, quattro, v6, s2. somebody would be able to help.

you may find 16v avants all but non existent.

fuel pump, engine, box, shafts, brakes, hubs, wiring to various CIS parts. depends on how factory and how much you can do yourself. find a 16v for parts id say. my mate gave me his 80 comp and i chopped the front clean off with grinder. even halved the inlet and exhaust in the same way for a quick "out"

                          IMHO, if it was me,

                          I have a 2.0L 16v Avant, a 2.6 auto V6 Cabrio and two s2 Avants, so from my perspective, I'd say

                          1. Change the engine out for a 1.8T from a later Audi, however will never have quattro though.

                          2. Sell it and buy a V6 Avant manual, ideally with quattro to futureproof it. Very cheap to buy if you keep your nose to the ground, pistonheads, autotrader etc..

                          3. Go straight to finish and buy an S2 Avant.

Depends on how much mileage you do, and what you want to use the car for, this will dictate what to do, together with available budget both now and in the future?

                          HTH.

                          Welcome and kind regards.
