as with any type of car my advice is go look a few. make a shortlist. the heart will buy the car for you. you will know as soon a you see it if its for you if you know what i mean.
every second hand cars have problems or some kind. thats why they are second hand.
in reality they are a better drivers car than the S2.
a new age bus will be as refined as an s2 but not feel as classy. inside an s2 is a nicer place to be.
tuning wise if thats of interest to a level (350hp) some subs are easier to tune. a classice 93-96, 93 being the first import rex have in general a tdo5 turbo. thats good for 350-360 hp with an FCD and AFR, boost controller and exhaust. really a front mount too. the S2 needs more mods to make those figures. issues wise. 350 and up will bring a short life to 3rd gear in a 5 speed subaru. the 6 speed is stronger. we saw signs of whine over the 450 mark though.
the s2 needs a few more mods but can take them. engine deosn't need to be replaced if a shell wears (subarus run no shells on crank in some instances). you fire and forget with s2 runnnig gear.
expect more wiring issues, the japs are good with that. expect cheaper suspension etc the japs aint good there.
to summarise both good cars at what they do with the s2 maybe carrying less of a stigma
