N/E Herts enthusiast considering an S2

Lo all, by way of intro , I'm a bit of an old git and am from N/E Herts. I'm a Classic Porsche enthusiast ( front enders only missus ) but the practicality of cramming the family in the back has been miffing me off for some time.

I have always wanted a 4 wheel drive car and , love modern classics but they have to be a quality make so you know where this has lead me dont you

Insurance isnt a major concern due to my mature years and history. Fuel , well what performance car is economical ? none of them. I do like forums / car meets & car clubs ( im in three) as well as shows and thought an S2 just might meet all of my requirements.

I have a few questions but possibly the hello section isnt the place for them all so for now its hello , and just one question . Is there a meet or show where I might meet a few S2's and S2 owners not toooooo far away from here.

    Cheers

We're trying to organise a meet at waterbeach in cambridge soon, there are a few people in herts with s2's, I used to live up that way with my s2 but do still come back quite often just not in the s2 currently.

If you like the idiosyncracies of Porsches then an S2 is right up your street... just in a ***** about face kinda way Of course, you can combine the two and get an RS2

Hello I'm in Hemel and would be up for popping round for you to have a poke around in an s2 avant so you could figure some bits out. I would ask as many questions as you wish in this post or maybe check out the other post by chewit who is thinking of buying one too ATM as he has alot of questions and answers going at the mo. Anyway I want a 356 as have always loved em but can't afford one! anyway let me know if you wanna say hi or see one or whatever.

Fire away with the questions we don't mind...

One thing you will find with an Audi over a Porker is that the parts are a bit cheaper....

And you don't tend to find the **** end in front of you when its wet an True Audi...

That m8ee ! , is one of the reasons I didnt 'enjoy' driving my last 944 Turbo. I am an experienced driver and have had a little advanced/track training etc no guru but I understand how to drive a car. Yet despite this I always fealt very nervous driving it in the wet. Yes its true all you have to do is drive appropriately for the conditions but boy could that back end go in the wet. You do not put the power down out of abend if its damp never minsd on one of course

Does an S2 really handle tht much better , does the 4 wheel drive really make that much difference ?.

As for meeting up to see a car , 'if' I am to get an S2 I will certainly be up for a nose , a bacon roll and a cup of tea ! , I'm a sociable chap thankyou. I go 1st Sunday each month to a free casual but long standing classic car meet known as
' cars on Hertford Heath' but TBH I dont think I have seen any Quattros there which suprises me.

I'll go check that other thread out later , time to go

              Regards Mas

Sat 24th July at Castle Combe (just past Swindon) is the Audi track day where we have a meet soon. That would be the best place for a chin wag and a nose at some S2's in various states of tune and modification, including close to standard.

If you have not driven a quattro in the rain, you really don't know what you are missing. on a roundabout they barely break loose in 2nd gear at full throttle.... Highly impressive.

                Cheers,

                Steve.

When you said Porsche, I thought of the 911 and was referring to the fact that the S2 is like a backwards 911 with respect to drivetrain.

There are many things about an S2 that you have to learn or 'get' but once you understand them, they're a very useable tool.

I have a rwd BMW E30 and the S2, the E30 is a scary machine in the wet also and the S2 is night and day different.

S2s are a very blunt instrument, I don't thing you'd ever say that they handled, more that they grip and grip and grip up to the point of mild understeer. They do suffer from lift-off oversteer but that's easily tamed. When you learn to drive and S2 in the correct manner, it really is a very capable car and can be very effective.

I think with a bit of practise they can behave like a rear wheel drive car to some extent. Slow in fast out, get on the power mid corner and the front won't wash out unless you are being silly. That is the way my car behaves on 245/40/17's standard springs and Bilstein dampers....

the S2 doesn't handle better it just grips better. i find it hard to lose grip most of the time in the audi.

                        944 turbo or S2.

tough choice. 944 far better drivers car and handling. s2 a safer allrounder

Keep it on the Cambridge side of the surrounding counties and I should be able to make a meet.

I found if you do it right you can get the back end out, i've had it happen loads in mine, wet or dry.

Depending when it was I could be tempted up for a wed night but its a bit of a trek for me and by the time I finish work etc it would be around 7 by the time I get up.
