      That could be fairly soon!

There is a clunk from the front nearside that i assume is bushes of some sort so will likely overhaul the front and replace bushes, bearings etc. May do the struts while i am at it and hopefully make it drive like new again

What group buys have you got coming up?

This was in the folder that came with the car. Is this power normal for a car of this age? Should I be concerned about the notes?

May change the plugs anyway as a matter of course so should i just use standard plugs?

Been thinking about the shopping list over the weekend and may go RS2 power route at some point but with the mileage on my engine it may need a refresh first.

Lots of other things to do first though!

I recommend you get on the Quattroworld S2/UrS6 forum too as there is a wealth of info and advice on it. I am very nearby to you so feel free to PM if you get stuck on anything or for a meet-up.
Thanks for that. Not a million miles away from them so will give them a try at some point. May have used them years ago when i had Golfs?

Any good paint and bodywork shops you know of as that's first on the list?

Along with some new tyres as its still running winters!

Interesting. I have never seen a dyno used to do a diagnoses (because of the price of a dyno run I presume). But looking at the curves, it does seem like a decent way to pin-point some issues. Your hp numbers are about right. Factory said 230 (crankshaft) DIN hp and with a 25% loss for drive train losses, etc. that would be 172.5 wheel horsepower. Your printout shows 173.6 so probably a good healthy engine (at that point). The tractive effort readout is in "lb" so it can't be directly compared to the factory peak torque number of 258 lb-ft. The curve looks about right (assuming the pencilled line is where it would be without the miss).

Very possibly as they have moved a couple of times over last 10 years, originally run by a guy called Sean (now in Oz). Type One in Westcliff are very good for bodywork they did a great job on lower door rust on my 16v Golf a few years back but they can appear somewhat disinterested in taking every job offered to them. Fairfax in Rochford are good too.

Before you start spending money on the car I would have a think about what you want from it. For example if it is going to be your main car or a DD and reliability is a priority then there is a list of things you should think about replacing sooner rather than later if there is no evidence of the PO having done it already. Things like ignition, fuel pump etc could already be on borrowed time. If you see the car as more of a project and the occasional layby stranding isn't a big deal then maybe direct funds at improving the drivability and performance sooner rather than later. If you can afford it, do both. But don't underestimate the ability of these cars to find ways of spending your money - it's a drug :-)

At the moment it is a bit of a long term project to create the ultimate family wagon! I am notoriously bad for changing my plans but at the moment I want to make the car look and drive like new bit with a bit more power. Have a second project on the go as an out and out performance car so power on the s6 isn't a big priority

Shopping list in no particular order is
                  Rust and paint
                  Suspension overhaul
                  Tyres (currently on winters)
                  Refurb wheels
                  Fix oil temp gauge
                  More power (300-450?) maybe
                  Sort any other potential issues?

Car is only used at weekends and we have another that we can use if this is off the road

Gut feeling is to sort the bodywork but will take on board the above and open to other suggestions!

You mention oil temp gauge not working - does the coolant temp gauge read normal all the time as thermostat failing open is very common fault on this engine and low oil temp will be a secondary symptom of that. Classic symptom of failed open thermostat is normal coolant temp when stationary which drops once you start moving and permanently low oil temps.

What mileage is car and is there any evidence of fuel pump or any ignition system components ever being replaced? Also on borrowed time may be underbody fuel lines there are 3 steel pipes running length of car on drivers side mine were in bad shape and eventually started leaking so had to replace. If all the suspension bushings are original then they will be shot as will be rear diff mounts. You only want to be stripping suspension once if you can help it so do everything you can afford to whilst you are in there eg subframe bushings, dampers the lot.

** EDIT ** Oh yeah and aux water pump is also high up list of failure parts at this age. I think it was the very first thing I had to change. Should be evidence of coolant residue if it is leaking. When it goes, it goes big time and will dump all your coolant on the floor :-(

Here is Dave F's official list of time bombs:

Things that will fail on your AAN and strand you on the side of the road

The FAQ on that site is the UrS6 bible IMO

There a few things that RHD cars don't have compared to LHD cars - like the coolant 'T' mentioned in the above link (and a pollen filter).

Will check but from memory the water temp gets up t about 90 and stays there. Oil temp doesn't move at all? Assumed it was either a faulty gauge or sender?

Don't think fuel pump has changed but was planning on an upgraded one at some point. Similarly not sure about the fuel pipe but guessing it hasn't been changed so added to the list.

Planning to change all bushes and suspension and probably dampers. The group buy here looks good so just need to decide which one to go for buy assume bilstein is the best option for me?

Can see a project thread coming on!
