Hi everyone, I've been looking to get a new car and these S2s are springing to my mind. I like them because they're different to everyone else and I love the 5 cylinder sound! I was thinking of getting the 225 Audi S3, I understand them and know quite a bit about 1.8 vags but the S2 seems really appealing, the only thing putting me off is that I don't know much about them, what are common mods on these S2s?
Welcome, you have come to the right place for knowledge on S2's.
The most common things are a simple map. The 3B versions are standard 220bhp, 5 speed box and with a map make about 270bhp? The newer ABY versions are standard 230bhp, 6 speed boxes and with a map make about 280bhp. Next thing alot of people tend to do is decat and exhaust it for slightly more. It depends how much money you have to play with but there are plenty of S cars here running RS power and more. Common for these are Intercoolers, turbos, injectors, manifolds etc etc. Lots of Porsche/ brembo brake upgrades. Lots of people have lowered their cars slightly on H&R springs so on, so on. basically its the same as other people with other makes of car. This forum has lots of specialist knowledge and if you are thinking of doing something the chances are its been done here and people will always give you a heads up or have the knowledge for help.
Also I think a few of the guys have had S3's and been disappointed with them and then got the S2 or have both but prefer the S2 for fun, sound, speed etc etc. Hope this helps.
You've come to the right place! S2's are a real wolf in sheeps clothing. so many people dont know what they are.
Must have mods include:
Porsche front brakes
Remap for close to 300bhp.
Decent exhaust and better suspension+anti roll bars.
But if youre a bit mad and have deeper pockets. Big big hp is possible!!
One of the best things about S2 ownership is this forum, so many knowledgeable and helpful and friendly people on here!
My advice would be to lurk on here for a bit and read some of the sticky's... and keep an eye on the classifieds

Thanks for that guys, makes it sound simpler!
I currently have a Mitsubishi Colt CZT (1.5 Turbo, 147bhp standard) which is running about 200bhp, it's very quick as it's fairly small. Similar process as me, I decatted, got a FMIC and remapped, etc. I want to move on and I did think an S3 would be okay as I wanted something quattro, but then the S2 is around the same spec as an S3 power wise but an S2 is quicker! All 5 cylinder is my favourite engine noise, I did want an ST but then I realised they're too common.
So there's remaps available for these? I'd be looking to get one soon but I understand they're rare, I'd definitely like a 6 speed one! Keep an eye out for me fellas!
Both the ones on eBay at the mo are to be avoided unless your looking for a serious restoration project, I suspect their pretty close to being breakers.
As you've already found S2's are getting very thin on the ground especially the good ones, unless you get lucky and stumble across something at random the best place to find one is in the for sale section on here.
Again unless you get very lucky or are looking for a project the best way into S2 ownership is to buy something that's already got most the mods you want done properly as well as being generally well looked after. Stumping a bit more upfront will save you a lot of money in the long run with one of these car's, you have got to remember even the youngest examples are 17 years old so it's essential that the car's been cared for.
Do as much research on here as you can stand before going to look at anything and if you want any info that you can't find just ask as someone will know.
