New member - Shall I buy the Coupe?

Hi there, greetings from Malta First post on this forum so apologies if it is not in the correct section. A friend of mine has a 1992 Audi 80 Coupe v6 quattro. He is letting it go for £1000. It seems to be in good nick apart form the usual age wear and tear. The problem is that it is not registered for road use and so I plan on using it for "recreational motorsport", but I have read many times that this V6 engine (AAH) is a total no no and of no good use to modify for some bhp gain. Is it really that bad? Will I be wasting money buying this car? Or there is still hope that it can be somewhat a promising project for a motorsport (hillclimbs). Some people suggested a 1.8T 20v form an S3 whilst he suggested a small single turbo setup with low PSI to keep stock internals. Thanks in advance

(PS. any gasket matching, TB porting, IM work and so on I can do my self so money for those is not an issue, thanks )

My personall opinion that v6 is not a good choice for any kind of motorsport. if the car is in good shape, then maybe you should buy it and think about doing a eiterh 5 cyl swap (best choice in my opinion) or maybe 1,8T 4 Cyl. V6 is just not worth the trouble.

    That is my 2 cents

Hmm thought so, apparently the v6 is of no good use ... would an 1.8t from an S3 or golf GTI be a relatively easy fit especially to mate to the gearbox and would this gearbox and rear diff be good for lets say 350bhp or would they fall apart considering they are not S2 drive-train?

The V6 is a big lazy engine ! More of a cruiser with the gearing to match. Yes it will go (a bit) but you need to stand on the loud pedal to achieve this.

You will not be able to use the gearbox and diff ! Wrong gearing and final drive unless your pushing 500bhp+

There are a few 1.8t conversions on here but bang for buck you will probably need 5 cyl turbo power.

I did look into this when my CQV6 was on the road and from what I could see as long as you have all the parts its relatively straightforward with only a bit of fabrication work needed for the mounts.
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

Hi Stefan, go for the 5 cylinder. I'll take you for a ride in my RS2 spec one when it's back on the road, just having some gear linkage issues right now but I'm confident of finding the issue

If the gearing is wrong as well which gearbox should I use in case of a 1.8t swap? the S3 gearbox maybe?

Ryan I'd deffinitly accept your invitation for a ride in that beast of yours!!

As for the option of getting a 5 cylinder, it seems to be impossible to find one in Malta (especially with the gearbox I think) and somewhat expensive to get from germany

On b3 coupe THE Engine is too far over the front axle line towards front. The heavier engine makes the situation even worse. and as mentioned before V6 is lazy engine.

I had suggestions from my mates (used to work with turbo stuff) 1.8t becouse of weight distribution issue and if its QUATTRO than 5 cylinder is just bit to heavy, but still alright.

So 2.2, 2.3 or 1.8.t sounds good to me in b3.

                  Or do a b5 2.7t swap?

Could you not export a UK RHD to Malta? Like others have said, I would avoid 6 cylinder Audi's if you want to make power upgrades. 20VT is the way forward.

S2's in the UK are not exactly ten a penny but you could definitely pick up an S3 for not too much if you wanted something quicker than a 6cylinder for "recreational motorsport" Not sure how easy it is to import cars to Malta so maybe this is not a good idea.

We are biased here but 20VT is the way forward for sure. Good luck with your hunt

The one I went to see is a B4, does it have this same issue as the B3. And you seem to suggest that a 1.8t is better then a 5 cylinder because of the weight no?

Wouldn't that make it heavier on the front end though?

I would definitely love to own an S2 but unfortunately it is out of my reach at the moment maybe I should wait then instead of going for this coupe or should I buy it and eventually go for a swap...what are the other different components between a regulat 80 coupe quattro and an S2 apart from the engine and gearbox?

This coupe will cost me £1000 (and if I sell the interior even cheaper) ... the cheapest S2 I founf from the UK will set me back around £5600 (shipped to Malta)

I think I might be leaning towards buying this car and dropping a 1.8t due to availability, price, weight and available parts/mods

Any build thread for a B4 with a 1.8t please as I could not find them?

If it s in good shape buy it and if it runs you don't have much to lose. They aren't making anymore so they just become more rare. If down the road you have the funds and want more punch do a swap. You might just be happy the way it is.
