Check the ECU part number. I would start by pulling the codes on why it won't start.

    cheers, Mike

Early AAN had a dizzy. It's a 7A cam cover on an AAN head from the look of it.

        Good News! It runs!!!
Thanks to everyone on here that pointed me in the right direction.

It turns out it was the timing jumped one tooth. I was stumped because it wasn't sparking or firing the fuel injectors. In other cars I've worked on, the timing can be off and it will still "try to start". In all the reading I did on the Audi 5 cylinder engines, no one ever mentioned that the reason it won't start if the timing is off is that the ecu won't even try to start. Everyone kept saying that it just won't start if the timing is off. No further explanation.

I was misdirected by this and chased an electrical fault because, as you can see by the pics, the car doesn't instill the most confidence in the wiring by looking at it.

What eventually "kicked me in the butt" and made me tear it down to check timing was this page I came across while looking for a new distributor to try. https://www.picoauto.com/library/cas...ilure-to-start

Here, they basically describe the same issue I was having. I was told the car ran when I picked it up, but it wouldn't fire up again. The thing that made it sink in was the way the Audi ecu looks for conditions to try to start the engine. Basically, the crank and cam signals have to be within a specified range before the ecu will try to start.

I'm amazed that a single tooth off on timing can cause such a run around.
        Anyways, thanks again.

If the head says AAN, it is an AAN head. However, it has a 7A cam cover and if it only has one coil it is running a 3B distributor and therefore at least a 3B intake cam (gear drives the 3B distributor). Probably used a 3B engine harness, etc. as well.
