    New S2 Owner

    Hi Everyone,
Although I have have a couple of Audi's already I finally got hold of the "one" I have wanted.
The car needs some work to get it to a basic level of reliability and comfort but this is a keeper for me and I'm not in any great rush to get it back A1 condition.
It joins my Daily driven RS6 (C5) and type 85 GT coupe FI (which sadly has to go soon). I hope that it will be ready to bring to aitp8 along with the rest of my friends S2's, Rs4's, S4's and RS6's.
Look forward to swapping tips and chatting when I get time!
    Cheers
    Carl

that's a nice car collection you have what's your plans for the S2 and am a huge admirer of the c5 RS6 quick question on that car are they really as expensive to run and when something goes wrong like gearbox or suspension or turbos does it break the bank??

            Welcome to the forum

You should come along to ADI in a couple of weeks, there's normally 30+ S2s and RS2s there and a good chance to meet some other members

I'm afraid to say that the answer is yes regarding owning the RS6, Mine needed a lot of work recently and is still not 100% but i'm getting there, gearbox and TC overhauled, both turbo's replaced, rear crank seal replaced, both intercoolers upgraded, A/C re gassed. to do is both front CV joints and lower shock bush's and trace an intermittent fault on bank 1 egt which is holding back the ecu to 400bhp (should be 525 bhp). DRC was replaced by previous owner so no issues there.

The S2 is in need of a few basics before any mods but will be changing the front headlights to the ellipsoid type as the standards are not very good. The front indicators will be swapped to clear as well.
              Work that will need doing
              replace clutch slave cylinder (supplied)
              full service
              replace cam belt (supplied)
              Fix tailgate lock
              fully vallet interior
sort out bonnet release cable and fit new gromit
              Refit stereo head unit
sort out alarm and central locking
ABS light is on, needs looking at
pre MoT to get an idea of any advisories and fix whatever it would have failed on
secure radiator and refit top ducting
front bumper needs a repair and paint as does the roof in patches so will try to get the worst bits done over the Winter.
              Project stuff
Engine out for top to bottom rebuild using APR parts
              Turbo swap
Exhaust manifold and full 3" stainless steel system
              install vems
No doubt other things will creep in as well.
Will post up progress as and when

Elipsoid headlights will not get you more light than the standard headlights when using normal bulbs in there. It will be a bit better with HID's but don't expect miracles.

Hi Carl, welcome to the right place for your S2.

                    1. DRC was replaced by previous owner so no issues there - It sounds reassuringly expensive for all of us with the I5 20vt engine / car, but who would still like to be able to afford to run a C5 RS6 Avant also.

                    2. The S2 is in need of a few basics before any mods but will be changing the front headlights to the ellipsoid type as the standards are not very good. - The Ellipsoids are miles better in looks, but not so in performance until you fit a inexpensive HID kit to the Ellipsoids.

                    3. The front indicators will be swapped to clear as well. - Agreed, makes the car more modern without ruining it.

                    4. Work that will need doing - What you know about right now.

                    5. Replace clutch slave cylinder (supplied) - Will automatically bleed the hydraulic line for the clutch which is a good thing.

                    6. Full service - Perfect - sets a baseline to work from.

                    7. Replace cam belt (supplied) - Also fit a metal impeller water pump, belt tensioner, new oem thermostat, all good to do at the same time while you're in there.

                    8. Fix tailgate lock - No experience of this myself.

                    9. Fully vallet interior - It will feel nicer and look better.

                    10. Sort out bonnet release cable and fit new grommet - Important to get this right to avoid a water ingress issue because of the grommet, also to sort the bonnet cable failing and leaving you with the grief of opening the bonnet without the cable.

                    11. Refit stereo head unit - Use one which is black and matches the period of the car but still has all of the modern bells and whistles. Upgrade speakers while still looking oem, if you patience / budget extends that far.

                    12. Sort out alarm and central locking - Depending on how good the installation was, and from looking at others experiences on here, you may wish to cut out all of the old alarm and get the central locking working as it should and then fit a modern alarm.

                    13. ABS light is on, needs looking at - Should be easy enough, although you may end up destroying the ABS wheel sensors trying to get them out to reposition them. Copper grease any you do mange to get out in tact, and obviously any new ones you have to fit. They can be checked electorally first as part of the fault finding. If there are already copper greased and easy to move, it may bode well that someone who worked on the car was interested / knew what they were doing, if seized, it might be the case that the car was just driven but not properly loved or understood.

                    14. Pre MoT to get an idea of any advisories and fix whatever it would have failed on - Agreed.

                    15. Secure radiator and refit top ducting - Yes, the various parts should still be available.

                    16. Front bumper needs a repair and paint as does the roof in patches so will try to get the worst bits done over the Winter Agreed, avoid making the bodywork too perfect as future dents and scratches will do your head in, unlike any additional ones now.

                    17. Project stuff - It's started already.

                    18. Engine out for top to bottom rebuild using APR parts - Photos and thread, thanks.

                    19. Turbo swap - A hybrid KKK 7000 might be good enough with a few other well chosen mods may be enough to make a quick daily driver. 350bhp with early boost.

                    20. Exhaust manifold and full 3" stainless steel system - Interested to see what route you choose.

                    21. Install vems - Fair play to you.

                    22. No doubt other things will creep in as well - You'd better believe it. If you want an insight in advance read other project threads on here.

While this particular thread relates to an Avant, most also applies to a Coupe or Saloon also. It may be too detailed, but a quick scan of it now to see what's in it, and it can then be searched for particular items as they relate to your car at different times in the future.

                    23. Will post up progress as and when - Great, looking forward to it, (in a good way).

tbh, from looking at these cars and forums over the years, one needs to decide if they are a keeper from early on, as it's easy to do a cheap sticking plaster job, but if you're sure it's a keeper then do it the real right way which will stand to you in years to come with reliability, satisfaction and reliability.

One of the big deciding factors is the mpg if the car is to be used everyday/regularly, although a new lambda probe significant increased my miles per tank regardless of how it is driven, easy or not so easy.

HTH the above helps a bit, and welcome again.

Hi Greg, as I work away a lot, most of the technical stuff will be done by my trusty mechanic/fitter/fabricator as he has looked after all of my cars for the last 5 years. I'm trying to buy a coupe for spares atm as mine has a few bits missing and I want to swap the headlights.

Just back from 5 weeks at work and things are progressing. work completed so far:
                            Clutch slave cylinder replaced
Cambelt, water pump and thermostat replaced
                            boot lock fixed
                            bonnet cable sorted
                            full service
                            new elipsoid headlights arrive tomorrow
new clear indicator lenses to fit as well
                            new battery to fit.
Need a new or good used vibration damper for the front pulley and will replace the front bumper as it's a bit too far gone for me.
it's now taxed so looking forward to getting it back and going out for a run

                              Good progress.

Believe it or not the bumpers for the S2 and the UrS6 are rare and expensive, so if you replace yours rather than repair / respray it, do not be tempted to throw out your current one. You never know when you'll be glad of it for yourself or a pal.

                              Just suggesting.

                              Regards.
