Hey Nick, depends what you are after really, 3B, ABY, 5spd, 6spd etc as this will affect costs quite a lot. As you probably know there are very few S2s left now so not many are broken, and prices are on the rise. You might be able to pick up a dodgy 3B for £2k but they are scarce. A better bet to consider might be an AAN out of a URS4/6 these are easier to find and often cheaper, plus all the running gear off a 20v coupe quattro will work and again is easier and cheaper to find.

Also worth taking a look at some of the project threads on previous mk2 conversions.as Alex says the urs4/s6 are a but cheaper and easier to get hold of

Baz's (gnutz) MK2 S2 project is pretty mental.

Buy a synchro and put a 1.8T into it, much less hassle, and a better engine weight and body weight match.

That would be much, much simpler and make a cracking car. However finding a rot free Syncro for reasonable money isn't easy these days and besides their not really proper four wheel drive, more like Haldex as opposed to Torson.

I agree with Alex, the days of cheap S2's are gone, use to be the case one could pick up a rough 3B for £2K pretty much any day of the week, now you'd have to be really lucky. The quattro system could be taken from any Coupe quattro or even a B3 quattro saloon, though the 7A engine will have the best suited gear ratios. Tatty examples can still just about be acquired fairly cheaply though even these are getting thin on the ground. An AAN engine from a URS4/6 is essentially the same as an S2 engine and the odd really rough car comes up for sale still. You want to buy a complete running donner car so you have everything and parts you don't need can be sold off to help fund the project.
