  • Nasty Noise! What is it?

Nasty noise on the Amethyst Avant.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

It's not there at idle, nice and quiet. Only happens at small throttle openings around 2000 rpm, accelerating gently between 2 and 3000 rpm is worst.

First noticed it a couple of days ago pulling away from home. Today it's worse.

Not using oil AFAIK. Otherwise running quite nicely.

I don't need this Video below.

I can't see the video due to poor net atm but what you describe sounds exactly like just before martins s4 shat itself. It was a worn main bearing

your right that doesn't sound good at all....sounds to me like something in the head as apposed to bottom end....noisy lifter or possibly something stuck in a valve..

Using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, it's not in the cam cover, definitely lower down. I can hear it quite loud in the block under the water manifold.. I think it's spun a bearing

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like it's gonna cure itself.

Wouldn't be inclined to drive it.

Thanks for sharing the video / audio clip.

Looking forward to seeing what it turns out to be.

My money is on a bearing of some kind.

I think it was actually a worn rod bearing on the s4, crank and rod were totally paggered

I've heard the noise now and its almost identical

I would guess Rod bearing from the sound. Deffo not a driver while it's like that unfortunately!

Was gonna say, isn't that number 4?

Is it definitely mechanical and not a cracking from the exhaust manifold?
