  • My Treser Ur Quattro Restoration Project

Made the decision today, instead of selling cheap or breaking, the car will be restored! I'm quite excited

I've owned this car for about 25yrs and it was my daily driver for many years. It has lived outdoors all its life. Mechanically its very good but the tinworm has finally taken it's toll and needs to be sorted. Both A pillars need work and the boot has holes on both sides as well as the fronts of the rear arches. First job is to strip the interior and then wings and bumpers off, fabrication, welding and full glass out paint. Thanks to Acidburn and Madwolf for the A pillars from a GT in good condition!

This is the car back in the 80s with the Treser front bumper.

About 5 yrs ago after a respray.

good choice John, nothing beats a good restoration
So I'm guessing the original Treser front bumper was destroyed in the fire? What bumper is on it now mate?
Have you still got the wheels in the fire damage pics, were they the original Treser wheels?

Yes, the Treser bumper melted in the fire, I got another one though and this lasted a few years untill I ran into a flood one night and the lower half snapped of and dissappeared.. The present bumper is a Rieger which is the nearest I could get in looks and kind of balaces the rear end ok. I was thinking of putting stock bumpers and spoiler back on but then it loses its uniqueness.

You are not the first person to say that! Maybe I should start a poll!

Well done John . I was in the same situation to you with my first beetle and came close to selling it though now it's sat in my garage with body off the pan. Hard choice and I'm glad you decided to keep it. Sometimes people know you for your car (case with ms and the beetle). Good luck. Will follow the restoration

I just think they got it so right with the original looks. The Treser convertible must rank as one of the ugliest ways of being transported...

There was a guy in Basingstoke that had a Treser (well it had the body at least) and he swapped it back to standard.

                        A poll would be interesting..

John, good to see you decided to keep her - always remember hooning round Combe in it, was great then and will be even better once she's returned to full fitness

I think I have to admit to agreeing with Darren, the Treser looks are not my cuppa, but it is a unique car so its hard to call either way. If it was mine i think I'd return to OE looks but keep the Treser bits safe so it could be returned in the future, if someone invents a time machine and you decide to grow a mullet to match it

Good decision. I spent years restoring Opel Manta's so I have to say that rust doesn't look too bad at all, I've seen a lot worse fixed, actually I've fixed a lot worse.
