If you push on the roof you can hear it crunching. It's still fairly solid at the front but you can push it down half an inch at the back right where the supporting bar is.
Acidburn has already hooked me up with a guy on Classic Audi who has a roof from a GT5
Car is due to go to Keith this week
Here's a pic of the underneath of the roof and one looking across towards the relay plate, to the left of the gear stick you can see daylight out through the wheel arch

Scheiße, Newsh. You've got your work cut out there.
This is why I decided against a Ur quattro years ago. I can handle treating a bit of surface rust on an S2, but rot is a different ball game.

I think it's great that you are restoring it. I just hope you don't find too many more nasties.

I'll admit, as others have, I am not a fan of the Treser kit. But I am aware that things were very different in the '80s. I think I would keep the kit safe in a shed somewhere, and stick with the original look now.
The engine mods are very nice to have though. Those old 10 valvers sure sound nice.

Interesting that you bought it with fire damage. The engine bay of my treser burst into flames too.

When was that? I did wonder if they'd bodged the fuel lines when changing the metering head.. I think it was probably a turbo oil line that let go though, hard to say. The guy driving it at the time was not insured to do so and therefore no claim was made.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but just get it dipped. That or do some of the main repairs then dip and e coat and repair the last bits.

Time spent repairing a shell totally out weighs the minor cost of having it dipped, you can then guarantee where you are with it.

The only downside to acid dipping something is it gets the job done quicker thus less money to be made by whoever takes on the rest of the resto job.

Sorry if acid dipping has been mentioned already !

plus you have the security of knowing that the areas you can't get to have been treated.

But that means stripping the car to the shell right?

yup, normally you get it dpped, then the shell can have the damage repaired and then it goes back to be re-dipped and then e-coated.

e-coating is electrophoretic coating, its how the primer is applied at the factory.
The shell is dipped in a big paint tank and then current is passed through it so the paint adheres to the whole shell inc the cavities as an even layer. then it gets baked. Its the best way, how the manufacturers do it

So its dipped in acid which strips all the paint and underseal and old wax off?
Then you weld it all up?
Then dip in acid again? (why do that again?)
Then etch prime? (does e-coat mean etch prime?)

E coat is a must, it really does depend on what John is willing to throw at this car, dip, e coat, full resto and a proper paintjob is going to run to a LOT of money, and that's before you put the whole thing back together.

Surface Processing did my Escort, these guys below did a nova shell I once saw and it was very good.

E coat as far as I'm aware is what the shells were dipped in st the factory.

If you acid dip the shell it gets into all the places a spray gun can't so that's why you e coat them, if you get it dipped then do the repairs it has to be dipped again simply as the metal has to be perfectly clean.

The dipping process will remove all paint, rust, underseal and seam sealer. It's very strong stuff but if your doing a resto it should be considered.
