    Dry-Sump System

    Hello,

I'm a member of the Go-4-Dakar team from Holland. We are a company full of students from the Dutch Automotive University at Arnhem.

We are currently designing a rally raid vehicle, in which we will compete in Le Dakar 2009. This vehicle will be a custom build 4WD space frame with a Volkswagen Crafter 2,5 Liter 5 cyl. turbocharged common rail diesel engine with 163 ps. According our information the engine block is based on the Audi 5 cyl. petrol engine in the rallycar audi quattro (1980-1989). We would like to equip this engine with a dry sump system.

So my question is, do you know a company or someone else who can delivery such a system for our engine?

    best regards,

    Stephen van Welij

What other benefits are there to a dry sump unless you are dropping the engine for a lower COG?

Main benefit is zero oil surge - that affect you get braking, accelerating, turning at speed which causes oil to slush all over the sump with potential for some bearings and/or the oil pump to become starved of oil for a moment. The old motorsport trick around that was to put lots of 'baffles' in the sump to stop it slushing around so much. The S2 has a pretty good set of sump baffles standard.

The other gains from dry sumping are -

                - Weight distribution : The main oil reservoir can be in any location required to improve weight balance.

                - Engine Losses : The dry sump system can be run from an electrical pump and this removes some losses from the engine which normally drives the mechanical pump.

Isnt the pump mechanical, i.e run off a belt like the one in the picture above?

Hey i'm also an automotive engineering student @ the HAN Arnhem.
As you are students just like me you know it is much cheaper to design a system like that! This isn't a high-tech piece of equipment, and there are not that much plug & play systems available for audi IL5's . Most of the systems are small series or one-off custom fabricated ones. Do some research on drysump-systems (like on zatzy, motorgeek) and build your own!

building your own is fairly simple, you just need to know pump pressure values and get the right scavenge and pressure pumps. Scavenge run off the crank. Also measuring up clearances for windage tray is important, 3-5mm is sufficient.

I'm going to try and design one during my university degree to use on my 10vT UR quattro...

its commen known; you will encrease more power too~ 10%
if you have 500+hp then its ~50hp more
and you can rev the engine higher
