The Cyprus log book also states the VIN that's on the car, I've been told by quite a few people that they believe its the original paint. I'll put up the other pictures of the underside and the few others i have maybe it helps.

I don't currently live in the UK so ill try get someone to have a look in the boot for that sticker.

I'll be honest from what you guys have said I feel more reassured today than I did yesterday morning!

Edit: The 20V cover is in the boot of the car, was tucked behind the spare wheel.

It's good you have that cover.... That car looks to be in really nice condition underneath, it's be restored to high standard at some point, someone's shown her some real love. Though I guess the climate in Cyprus is a lot kinder on cars than the UK's salty roads. It's also got the correct forged front wishbones, though I think some 7A Coupes also had them as standard.

The lambda probe and MAF wires should be held in a small bracket located near the drivers side strut tower behind the brake fluid reservoir. From your pic that doesn't appear to be there. Not sure if the Coupe quattro has the same tapped holes to attach the bracket? I could take some pics of this area/bracket and you can have a look to see whether they are there. If it was a full engine/loom swap little things like that may have missed.

In fact, they are not tapped holes but threaded studs from memory. Check if they are there

To my mind, everything looks right bar the strut brace, so my mind then wanders to the possibility that the car had a front end smack early on and was repaired with new panels, minus the strut brace brackets?

Could explain the good paint, too. Not many have that at 30 + years old, the lacquer at the very minimum is at end of life.

That is a fairly reasonable suggestion, I guess both inner wings may have been replaced, it's certainly a conundrum this car!

BTW those HT leads are routed incorrectly, they should go around the back/under the throttle body then emerge where that blue hose is and run inside the recess in the cam cover, then there's a plastic cover that say's "20V Turbo" on it which goes over the top, that is being picky mid you.

Also the ISV pipe work doesn't look quite right but that doesn't mean it's not an S2.
There's quite a few hoses or connectors that don't seem right. Again, not to say it's not an S2, but I'd wager that engine has been out the car for some reason and if it came out to go back in, why would it not be put back together the same way.

Mine was an early 3B and had the strut bar too.

Ive had someone rummage through the boot of the car, but no sticker. Unless its on the side somewhere. When i picked up the car it had alot of paperwork with it, but typically had been left in the glove box and due to the heat of Cyprus all the ink from every piece of paper was unreadable... Cyprus spends the majority of the year between 35c and 45c.

and your right K Simmonds, Cyprus is much kinder to cars even the wettest winter is like a british summer, this car has also been dry stored since 1994 to my knowledge which i imagine has a big impact.

I've added a picture of the boot space, ill also try get that Audi birth certificate as was mentioned earlier.

The previous owner didnt mention about being repaired, he had mentioned that it had cleaned the whole engine up as the car was out of use for a long time.

I'd say the engine has almost certainly been out, if both inner wings have been replaced they'd have to have removed it to do that job, but as you say why not put it back together properly.

Trouble is with 30+ years old cars with not much history it's hard to know what happened when.

In my mind there's two options...

One, the car suffered a heavy front end early in it's life when such damage wouldn't have written it off, both inner wings got replaced and a couple of things got over looked.

Two, the shell isn't an S2 but someone has gone to the trouble of fitting the the front section of the exhaust tunnel from a 3B S2 to a CQ shell giving the car the distinctive flares for the Cat's, in order to re-shell a crashed 3B. But then why not fit the strut brace brackets as well given how obvious that is?

In either case there should be tell tales around seams and spot welds. Though both could be hidden very well by seam sealer and underseal.

First off you need to try and find the build sticker on the back panel, then you need to get the car on a lift and have really good look at what's happened around those flares.

That sticker isn't hard to find it should be on the rear panel behind the carpet, you don't need to be a mechanic to locate it.

Well you should have been able to find the build sticker looking at that photo.

The Audi birth certificate seems like a worthwhile option.

Have you got the original service book by any chance? As there will a duplicate of the build sticker on one of the first pages in there, the chassis number on that obviously must match the one on the VIN plate. Though the VIN plate is not hard to swap to another shell.

I have haven't been able to locate the build sticker in my 3B. Mine doesn't show any signs of previous repair to the rear quarter but no signs that it's been removed previously or ever been there. Whereabouts should it be?

It's been nearly six years since I looked at my 3B but I seen to recall it was fairly low down the rear panel towards the drivers side.

Someone must have posted a pic of one in situ on here somewhere?

Just found an old thread and apparently it should below the drivers side tail light behind the plastic storage bucket thing.

Sadly i dont have the original service book either. My Cyprus log book states the same VIN of WAUZZZ8BZLA01028 along the engine number 0000006992, the engine capacity of 2226, and the 162kW.

Ill also at somepoint try do what you mention about getting it up on a ramp, wont be the near future sadly as i dont live in the UK and have a new born coming in the next couple of days (one of the reasons it went up for sale).

From what i've gathered from alot of this discussion is that the majority of the car points to it being an original S2, and that the likelyhood of someone taking a QC and changing the floorplan/converting the car to a 3B S2 would be unlikely along with this work would of had to be carried out prior to export in 1994 (That would be relying that customs in Cyprus would do their job correctly).

It's pity you don't have the original service book as that would answer the question of is it an S2 or not immediately. Still, if you don't have it then there's nothing you can do about it.

I reckon the car is an original S2 that suffered a heavy front end very early on in it's life and both inner wings were replaced, I've worked in a body shop (though I'm more of a mechanic) and even with proper insurance job's oversights are made as one is always fighting the clock.

That make's much more sense to me than someone going to the huge effort altering the the exhaust tunnel and floor pan of CQ and not simply do the the strut brace mounts as well, which is a simple job as long as you have the parts to weld on.

Prior to 1994, that car would have been still worth a lot of money and such work would have been viable under the insurance, it's likely that Audi themselves did it but without any paperwork it's very hard to know.

I'm sure you'll be able to find out eventually what's happened.

Though it is going to make selling it for good money tricky until you have the answer, which given your situation with a new born sounds like a right pain in the backside!

apart from that vin plate the vin should be stamped in metal in the firewall just below the rubber that runs on the top of the firewall in the right side, your left if in front of the car. Mine it´s an ABY and that stamped metal with the vin is checked every year for Mot. It isn´t an attached plate as in your pictures but as been soldered in the factory before painting!
