  • Audi RS2 - exhaust cat-back recommendations

    Hello,

I still have the original exhaust on my 1995 UK RHD RS2, which I have owned since early 2001. My car has a Stage 1 on-the-road remap from MRC (that was done with me driving it) in 2009. I have been happy with the stock exhaust, but it now looks corroded from (but excluding) the catalytic converters back towards the exhaust tips.

The garage who are now looking after my RS2 have recommended that I replace the corroded part of the exhaust with a new exhaust cat-back. The garage initially suggested the Milltek SSXAU184, but that is out-of-stock everywhere in the UK in spite of what websites are stating and Milltek have said they are not going to make any more of the SSXAU184 for the RS2.

What are the current alternatives for a new replacement exhaust cat-back for the Audi RS2?
Does anyone have a 3" Jetex exhaust cat-back fitted to an RS2? If so, how does it compare?
    What do RS2 owners recommend?

I am looking for a quiet exhaust with similar characteristics to the stock Audi RS2 exhaust and no bangs, pops, flames or droning at any speed (including on motorways) - I am too old for that.
I need the exhaust to get through an MOT easily (I am not going to change all or part of the exhaust each year for the MOT).
I am happy with the stock Audi RS2 catalytic converters, so I am just looking for a new exhaust cat-back.

    Thank you

The Milltek is slightly louder than the original with the cats in place. It will drone if the cats are removed. I have Rs2 downpipe, Rs2 cats and Milltek on my S2 Nothelle. I drove it to Germany and back no issues. Last year I drove my Rs2 project to Germany and back with oe exhaust. It was noticeably quiter. Apparently Milltek are supplying RE Motorsport with a full system for their Rs2 project (from late brake show) so should be able to make you one if you ask nicely. I did have a good second hand one but sold it a couple of months ago
Supersprint do a fantastic system but I'm not sure how loud it is.

I have the Simons Jetex 043-h5dr (3") on my non-turbo V6, and it is loud and droning.
The turbo stops a lot of noise on the S2 en RS2. I will put a db killer inside to see if that helps.

The exhaust you already have has lasted 30 years. Audi OE “long life” exhausts of this era are at a quality level not found today new.

I would keep it stock, and find a good pro-preservation mechanic to weld the original if it gains any cracks or leaks, which are more likely at the joins.

It will probably “look corroded” but run fine for years to come. There is probably a lot of good metal left under that “corroded look”, which you will have less of with a new exhaust.

Thank you very much for these responses.

I am not entirely sure but I think the part numbers for the original 1995 Audi RS2 UK RHD silencer and muffler are 8A0253409AF and 8A0253609AR. The best case scenario would be to find NOS Audi RS2 replacements for those parts but that seems unlikely. So it looks like my options are either to replace those parts with the Jetex 43-H5DR (which may or may not connect to the rest of my original Audi RS2 exhaust with clamp 8A0253139A) or to keep my corroded (but still working fine) original RS2 exhaust.

I don't want to replace the entire Audi RS2 exhaust and catalytic converters with a new aftermarket system, which rules out the Supersprint (unless Supersprint do a cat-back option that would fit like the Jetex 43-H5DR - but I don't think they do).

Milltek have ruled themselves out, as when I called them they said they are only willing to consider making the RS2 exhaust cat-back SSXAU184 again if there are at least 10 firm orders (zero currently).

By the way, since we’re on the subject of parts and accessories, I’ve recently been wondering if Autodoc is reliable. So far, my experience has been positive overall, as I've often bought consumables there.

What? If Autodoc has a genuine RS2 exhaust, I’m Mickey Mouse

…and NO, you’re not reliable. You’re the last point of call generally.

Having tried a few different options on my RS2, I’ll share my personal experience. As an alternative to the standard exhaust, people usually consider Jetex, Supersprint or Milltek, or they might opt for a custom setup from a reputable shop. A lot depends on the sound and handling you’re looking for. However, if you plan to tune the engine further, I’d still recommend a custom exhaust as you can tailor it to your liking in terms of both sound and performance. If you’re looking for parts, Autodoc is a reliable option.

Thanks for this. I will renew my commitment to avoiding Autodoc as a result of this sales strategy. You’ve crossed my subversion tolerance now.

The Jetex 43-H5DR is £662.27 and in stock.

It can drone at motorway speeds so on the S2 we recently did, we had P D Gough in Nottingham make us a full turbo back system with new Jetex 200 CPI Euro 2 cats

We had them make the cats and rear section before we stripped the car to aid logistics later

Then, after two years rebuilding it, they made me a new front pipe to the original and it fitted perfectly. I double layer heat wrapped it and resin impregnated it before installation, God did that make a stick and a LOT of smoke! I forgot to take a picture.

I had to make most of the heat shields

The Supersprint turbo back exhaust is the best quality out of all the the aftermarket options and barely louder than stock, though best of luck finding one for a reasonable price!

A good exhaust fabricator could make up a very nice cat back system for half the cost, that would probably be my choice on an RS2 or simply stick with the OE system and get it repaired if and when necessary which is what I plan to do with my car...

The Miltek system is great quality but a little louder than stock, not an issue with cats but without them they drone as Dave mentions, I've no experience with the Jetex system so can't comment other than to say they make good quality products at very reasonable prices.

I had a Jetex on a Mk2 Golf Gti 16v many many years ago. It was fantastic
I never knew they did one for the S2 Avant/Rs2.

Snap! Though mine was on an 8V, my second car. I can even recall what it cost back in 1997, £189.99 from Demon Tweaks on special offer, I can also remember driving to Wrexham to collect it. I had a cat back system on my second Corrado which was on the car when I purchased it, both sounded great without being too loud...

My only other experience with them was the back box I had on my S2, fitted really well and considering that was the only box/cat on the car surprisingly quiet.
