How much would it cost ...?

Without sounding like I'm way in over my head, and like a total newbie ... Realistically speaking ... If "a friend of mine" was to decide that "he" wanted to remove his ABC V6 out of his 80 Quattro saloon .. And wished to replace it with an ABY/3B lump .. How much is it actually going to cost ? What would actually be involved ? How much fabricating ? How many parts underneathe/suspension wise would need changing ? Etc etc .. I figured that there are many a man on here that have done/are doing this ... And just wanted to get a realistic answer.

    For a "friend" of course

Only consider an ABY set up.

Ask Tonks 4x4 how much he'll charge you to do it.

Can your friend weld, read wiring diagrams, and do they have deep pockets, has he cut his teeth on something similar for say a Golf, or would it be your friend's first time out of the box ?

As while saloon is a lovely idea, buying an Avant or a Coupe might be the easier option for a myriad of reasons.

It all depends on your friends circumstances, circle of friends, contacts, etc. etc.

It is a worthy goal though.

To do it properly, you're looking at buying an Avant to strip and then swap it all over...

Cheaper option is to get one that's being broken and buy all the parts. That's £1500 upwards depending on whether you do the gearbox, suspension, hubs etc.

If you can find a car with some useful upgrades, then it should pay for itself very quickly...

As above, easiest way will be to buy a salvage avant and transplant everything over that way you get all the running gear too - they are rare now though. To do it all separately budget about £3-4k if you want 6spd, 5 stud hubs etc etc.

Good value, if you knew what Rystynut had spent on his genuine S2 saloon

Again and again...3b and aby can be considered identical.Specialy if not speaking about s2 3b and aby cars.
So,you can buy any engine you want 3b,aby,aan(yes,aan,better positioned IM).And any loom you want:3b,aby,aan and ABY or AAN Ecu.

You need a good engine, not a part number. If you want to keep it stock/almost.
If you plan mod stock/chipped power you can buy any engine it will be prep anyway.

                  Why ABY only?
ive got a few of each including 440bhp ABY. 3B is best to drive.
                  Tonksy's S2 was a 3B.

Just ditch the ABY flywheel in favour of a 7A or 3B item and you get the best of both worlds

AAN means you have to move the radiator, so is a bit more involved than just a straight swap in to a B4 chassis.

While it may not be used on the final incarnation of a 3B engine used in the original poster's 80q saloon, I don't like the distributor style ignition system of a 3B. Just my own bias.

Actually the dissy ignition is very reliable up to chipped RS2 power levels and is cheaper to maintain, granted the ABY coil pack set up is more advanced and technically superior, simple's, however when all the components are getting on for 20 years old it's not so hot. One thing ABY's really do have in their favor is a latter version of Motronic with better software options, there again 3B ECU's come socketed as do some early AAN's I believe.

So as has been said you want a good strong motor and ancillary's not a number and the best way by a mile is to get a complete running car, preferably something beyond economical repair for one reason or another as the doners your looking at are all rare cars.

I would want a minimum of £4K sat in the bank with project written on it.

Thanks for the input chaps .. Know what I'm heading towards now atleast. Is there much price difference between a 3b motor and an ABY ? In terms of just engine and bits ?

As engines out of cars on a pallet good ones are worth roughly the same with perhaps a slight premium on ABY units. A knackered 3B S2 or URS4 would probably be the cheapest source vehicle, but an S2 Avant would have better parts compatibility with a B4 saloon, the rear end in particular, and would be my first choice for what you want to do.

Doing it without a complete doner will cost more in the long run and be much more difficult, trust me I've done a couple of engine swaps for customers and it's amazing how many little things like brackets and clips you need to do a tidy job.
