It’s the plastic bit on top which is cracked. I bought some high temperature epoxy resin as suggested.

However, I have seen a radiator on eBay for £80 which sounds a bit cheap.

Back to the brakes and the NS calliper that isn’t getting any brake fluid. Once again I tried the pressure bleeder and then started undoing the brake pipe unions to see what was coming out as the pressure was just building and the fluid going back into the bottle due to the back pressure.

I can confirm that there is supply to the brake bias valve and also fluid out of it and into the abs unit. However there is no brake fluid coming out of the VL port which serves the NS brake calliper.

I’ve removed the abs pump and put the airline in the left hand side feed and nothing comes out. Interestingly when you put the airline on the VL port it does blow out through left hand side feed port.

I would like to take the alloy top off the abs unit but what tool is required as it’s five sided as opposed to six for the Allen key type fitting.

            Replacement abs unit time?

ABS unit replaced at the weekend and we have brake fluid coming through with the pressure bleeder attached. The brake fluid itself looked bad so I put a couple of litres through.

Also replaced the pollen filter when I eventually found out where it was.

Well done. Brakes at last! I wonder what the problem is with that unit, must be a shuttle valve jammed or maybe just some debris??

Eventually and thanks. Time I think to get it booked in for a MOT.

There’s a few threads on here with this problem but many are not concluded.

I do plan to take the faulty ABS unit apart when I find a five sided Allen type tool and report back.

How time flies and how consumed I've been with other things, mainly finishing off the building work and a new kitchen.

I've very recently been talked into selling my 3.0 B7 convertible (which I regret) and as such I needed a car to get about in so decided to get the S2 MOT'd. The MOT tester said that the car was in good shape underneath which is nice to know but it really struggled with the emissions.

So today I connected my ebay scanner to see what codes there were. Unfortunately it kept saying link error however there was one instance where it displayed 00537. I believe this is the lambda sensor. Other symptoms are that the exhaust gases are a bit smokey and it seems to be running very rich and the idle is lumpy, almost hunting between 850 and 1000 rpm.

Is there any way of testing the lambda sensor.

Anything else I should be looking for?

2nd issue as being as I'm going to be driving this for a while, the heater system is only just blowing at ambient temperature. I've bled it several times, even putting the hosepipe in the heather matrix and water comes out the other side just fine. I've replace the thermostat and water pump so all is good there.

I have red hot water going in and out of the heater matrix in the pipes so what else do I need to check?

I'm not aware of any reliable way to test the lambda sensor. Just swap it for a genuine Bosch replacement.
The heating issue will be the foam on the heater box flaps breaking down. Hot air is no longer being directed where its meant to go.

I also struggled with emissions at last MOT but had no codes. I have run a Cat Clean product through for now as I ran for a while with a misfire (coil pack) and probably sooted up the sensors and cats a bit in the process. Since the clean my mpg has improved but that may be wishful thinking.

                            I’ll get one ordered today.

Any tips on where to start with getting the old foam out?

You need to remove the airbox. Dash out job unfortunately. Change the heat exchanger while there if its not been done before. I used self adhesive neoprene sheet on the flaps.

Not what I wanted to hear especially as I have a bad back. Is there an easy way of removing the foam as a temporary measure until I feel well enough to remove the dash. Just need a bit of heat.
