  • Astra Clutch Replacement

My friend’s son has an 05 Astra convertible, the clutch has gone in it
What are these like to do? Can it be done on the driveway?

No idea, but if it were an '85 it could be done in the drive before breakfast!

Seriously it could be a subframe out job??......do-able on drive depends on what you've done before on drive?

I'd say give it a go......and when it's done get him to punt it and buy an 80 cab.....assuming he's a hair dresser...or likes the look of himself!?

My wife had a 1988 GTE back in the day. Cambelt change 1 hour, Clutch 2 hours. Very easy to work on and durable to. Think she did 150k in it before we sold it and never saw the dealer once.

Shame they rusted, they were good cars. I have recollections of seeing 130 on the speedo, a glimpse from the back seat, I think we were 5 up, heading for a night out in Germany from Heerlen in Holland........back in the day. I remember the night out

Was going to say the same !! a pal had a 16v one which I used to look after and for as fast as it was you had to be careful.
Was your Golf a small bumper type?

Sorry John but we have hijacked your thread!
No, it was a late big bumper 1991. One of the best cars I have ever owned. I wish I'd kept it

I expect you'll need to move the subframe to do it, but should be doable.

I’ve watched a video for a late 90s car and it can be done by removing 2 covers from bell housing and gearbox, pulling the input shaft out and clipping down the clutch basket, at which point it can just be slid out. Looks easy enough. Not sure if the 05 is similar though, need to look under the car..
The Zafira looks way more complicated..

Astra Van of the same era was subframe off job. IIRC they have a concentric slave cylinder which is worth doing at the same time. I had a nightmare getting the new slave to bleed properly.

Last astra h I changed clutch on was a 1.6 16v for a friend as every garage told him it was a huge job, subframe off etc. Did it on a ramp with nothing more than a Halfords socket set. You can move the box over enough without dropping subframe to change the clutch. Bigger engine/gearbox might not be the same though

This was a 6 speed diesel though.
