80 cabriolet? Thoughts

im surprised you didnt know paul as they did do a 5 potGonna stick my neck out here - I actually like them. Dunno about all the engine choices but I'd say the later series with automatic roof is nice - just a cruising car as posted already. Way too bendy for speed. Still quite stylish and understated. I'd go for a V6 probably (AAH engine) - can't remember if any 5-pot cabrios got built - that would be a nice warble with the hood down. The later ones have the 4-pot 1.8L 20V engine (ADR) which also appeared on A4/A6 - probably cheapest on juice.

I just bought one for my wife in august 1997 1.8 4 pots 20 valve ADR with the whole lot of options manual A/C eletric top third brake light on the boot silver blue top blue interiors leather/cloth and very good mileage 85000km (with service book).
I do like it for cruising no good for anything else......but for that it's just perfect and delightful....also cosumption as already posted it's ok 10/11 km per liter
It reminds me of my S2 coupe.......problem is that same dashbord same driving position same wheel and gearknob got me on some serious problem while overtaking because i fell like i'm driving the RS2..........ooppss some power it's missing!....lol!
P.S
Also not many but some of the latest in europe were fitted with the 1.9 TDI engineComment

Diesel convertible - what is that about ?
I just wasnt sure about the 5-cyl usage on Cabrio - assume thats gonna be the KV (2226) or NM (2309) then - both 10V Jetronic IIRC. Nice warble alright... But a 7A conversion could be fun for extra zip for overtaking etc, but its not like the chassis could carry any great extra speed thru the turns.
Gotta wonder how a Cabrio would react to some of the stiffer suspension and uprated dampers that are available for B3 platform... Maybe not worth it if its not rigid enough though.
Here's a question for UK Cabrio owners / experts - did they ever come to UK with digital climate control fitted - or the same manual 3-knob thing that all the other 80 variants have in RHD form ?

Don't like it...
Trying too hard.
Wheels don't fit / Over-Tyred.
Too low for real roads.
Rims would drive me insane for cleaning.
All show and no go really.
Bet it has a 'wicked' sound system.
Nice colour though.
No disrespect to whoever's it is - just think its overdone... But I'm a grumpy old git.

Paul, you're a grumpy old git.
It's an 80 cabby, so was designed from the factory for all show and no go.
Remember the pimp chrome a-pillars were standard!
You have to at least agree it's definately not Barry material!Nothing feels fast for long...

I've had a couple of cab's with uprated engines and tbh scared the hell out of me with chassis flex on hard cornering, they are not too bad in a straight line but trying anything remotely fast makes you feel the actual car flex which is not nice.Diesel convertible - what is that about ?

7a I think would be the limit, would have liked to hear how the s2 engined red cab that was built handled like and how it felt under pressure.Comment

I agree that's a nice nice looking Cabrio, for the Mrs like.
It's an NG Paul. Not an NM.I just wasnt sure about the 5-cyl usage on Cabrio - assume thats gonna be the KV (2226) or NM (2309) then - both 10V Jetronic IIRC. Nice warble alright... I think a 2.3 10V would be ideal really. A revvy NM or 7A just wouldn't suit it. If you're into V6 soundtracks then of course the 2.8 AAH is the way to go IMHO. As pointed out Cabs are for cruising.
I like where you're going there.

Doesn't look like UK cars got the climate option:

No Cabriolet came with climate in the UK.
By far the biggest headache, going off the cabriolet section of fans, is the roof.
80% of all the questions asked in there from four years worth of posts, are roof related.
The hydraulic roof might seem like a great idea, but it's the worst option of the two. Boot looms for the roof being the PITA. Windows not dropping when roof is opened or closed, catches not releasing on the top of the screen due to failed sensors, electric windows not working due to failed roof sensors etc. Hydraulic pump for the roof seems like it's prone to leaking too.
Also the rear screen hazes over and in most cases will eventually crack. Rear screens can be bought, but to get a good job you really need the correct machine to do it. Not a job to be done by hand.
All the rest of the car is basically the same as any other Type 89 B4 chassis car. Front end is B4 80 and Coupe based and doors are the same as the Coupes. Rear lights/bodywork and bumper are unique to the cabby.
Driven a couple of 2.3 (NG) engined cabs, sound great, has the 10v low down torque, but wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding if you really needed to press on.
But then the cabby wasn't about that. It's a posing car, same as any other ragtop.
Driven one 2.8 and it was better, power wise anyway. Still seemed to squirm around corners a bit when pushed.
Lord only knows what those two fully custom converted S2 engined, quattro driven Cabs were like that QST did
